Not necessarily. The 1991A1 compact I had was so darn heavy it wasn't much worse than my fullsize 1911. But it had a 3.5" barrel.

I shot a Dan Wesson .445 supermag once. Full hot load put out a fireball roughly 3' in diameter and my buddy who was watching from the side it was 4-5 feet long. My hand hurt afterward
As I get older and hopefully wiser I've come to realize that the size of the gun isn't nearly as important as hitting your target. And my 9mm hollow point +P ammo is more than enough to do the job.

Because I wanted the ability to defeat windshields, sheet metal, and light body armor?

I've never seen sheetmetal and windshields stop 230gr fmj's either. it's still going to hurt like hell getting hit in the chest with it even if it doesn't penetrate and is just as likely to incapacitate them long enough to get away or put some more into the fleshy areas not protected.

If you want to get through light(i.e. handgun) body armor reliably, you want a rifle or a shotgun.

and kicked like a mule!!!!
I have a Springfield 1911 Champion (Officers model 1911 with target sights) and a Colt Mark IV Series 7 nickel and the way they shoot is completely different.
That is another reason I like the .38, very light and easy to carry.
Try a Star PD with hardball sometime (.45). Dr.Linda shot one once and it put her off handguns for a year.

I have to be honest, the Rossi M88 that I have is the hardest recoiling handgun I own right now. very light, 2" bbl and full load .38's make it a handful and a half. I made the mistake of having the wife shoot it first(because of simplicity and ease of use). It's taken me a few years to get her to try another gun!

Disagree with that one. I have 3" and 4" Kimber 1911s and neither is painful to fire. The 3" is a wee bit loud, though.
