So we're planning on taking the kids (who are 9 & 5) on a Road-Trip, driving from East-Central Illinois to Disney in spring and I'm wondering what kind of sights there are along the way that you guys would recommend. Think classic road trip, like the giant ball of string kind of stuff or, even better, some natural wonders to spend an hour or two at to make it about the journey as well as the destination.
Thanks!

GATORLAND. You are a bad parent if you don't take them there.
Ripley's believe it or not is not far from tail of the dragon and the end of the blue ridge parkway.
Disneyland or Disneyworld?

See Rock City.
I actually thought it was kinda cool.
We (SWMBO and I) did something similar a couple weeks ago. Started out going to Nashville and seeing the Marathon Auto Factory where Antique Archaeology's shop is. Then went to my dad's in MS. Then from there went through Birmingham and took state highways through SE AL. There were some interesting sights to say the least. Then made it to Venice, FL to my in-law's for 5 days. Left there, went to the challenge, then hit Ruby Falls on the way home. It was raining and foggy so we didn't do Rock City. We did go to the International Towing and Recovery Hall of Fame and Museum though.
If you're heading out west...
Silverton Colorado is gorgeous. Petrified Forrest and Canyon de Chelly (anasazi Indian cliff dwellings) are within striking distance. Grand Canyon of course.
Passing through Phoenix then the Penske Automotive Museum is a nice stop, not huge but a cool collection of race cars. Down here in Tucson there's the Pima Air and Space Museum as well as the Titan Middle Museum.
But if you're going to the east coast then I have no experience.

Whoops, my bad, Disney World in Florida.
Thanks for the ideas guys!
Chattanooga.......it has Rock City, Rose Falls, aquarium,National Tow Truck Hall of Fame, and you can stay in a rail car at the Chattanooga Choo Choo Holiday Inn. And ,yes we did all this with our boys years ago.
It's no ball of twine but here are two things along the way.
Lane Motor Museum in Nashville, TN.
One hour north of there, National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY
That being said, I largely agree on anything that does not have an admission charge. Thinking back to being a kid, I was raised well and we learned how to have "free fun."
I highly recommend any of the National Parks
