This is really a long shot.

My dad had a friend who flew at Midway and several other campaigns.

In his office, he had a series of photographs of him limping a shot up corsair back to the carrier and cartwheeling it down the deck on the wing tips, nose and tail.

When I was in 8th grade, we were watching a film about the Pacific War and I saw the actual footage of this same crash. The pictures were stills from the film. I couldn't help it, I shouted out, "That's John Vandegrif!"

I've watched a bunch of videos on YouTube, never found it, so it might never have been digitized. I would love to see it again, to remember him and my dad. Does it sound familiar to anyone?

I don't know what ship he was on. From what I remember from my dad, John was in the ready room with the other pilots, when a kamikaze hit the ship on the next deck below. It crushed their deck upward and killed everyone else in that space except him. He was blown out through the hole in the hull and landed in the water.

He spent a year in the hospital, and eventually lost one, and then the other leg.

I found a John Vandergrift in this database: https://www.aviationarchaeology.com/listpages/navy/asp/USN_Type_F4U.asp but the crash was at MCAS Mojave, not a carrier. Date was 440205.

That's interesting. I'll have to take a look when I'm not on my phone. It can't seem to handle the data
