So, now that they have announced this, I wonder how many charges will be instantly dropped thanks to the use of a personally owned vehicle.....
Also, in other news, unmarked police vehicles need to be completely banned.
Don't actual police vehicles have specially calibrated speedometers, etc? This doesn't seem legit to me...

Most deputies even in my low paying area make $45k/yr starting out. If you didn't have a bunch of bills otherwise, you could have cool things.
Many departments have a need for officers to work overtime so if one wants the extra income it is often available for those that want to put in the OT. Also in some places police get other "discounts" or "deals" that the average person won't. As in some apartment complexes offer greatly reduced or free rent if an officer brings a marked car home every day, some food locations offer free or significantly reduced meals if officers come in uniform, other types of businesses offer discounts for officers in uniform. If you run a business in a sketchy location offering good discounts for uniformed officers encourages police to visit more frequently, potentially reducing losses due to crime, and may increase business because law abiding people may feel safer knowing that there are frequent police visits.
