Going to attempt to relax and do something different. Going north from Boston to Canada, hopefully will see some good fall colors. SWMBO has done this a few times, first one for me. Any helpful GRM advice for a noob?

Been a while since I've been on a cruise ship, depending on prices and predilection for drinking, the all-inclusive drink thing can be worth it.
Other than that, the important thing is usually to think of the excursions wherever the ship stops and plan accordingly.
it's a shame you wanted a cruise. I always thought the boats you rent to go through the Rideau Canal in Ottawa would be fun.
We just got back from a Canadian cruise from Boston two weeks ago (today, Sunday).
Try things you've never done- there are probably a lot of parties and events on board that you should look into. If you are going on Royal- there's an ice rink- see the show. And the guest entertainer does Frankie Valle (sp?)- I know they are staying on board for 30 days.
The ports are all the same regardless of the line.... Portland is nice to walk around, but not all that awesome. Hope you have good weather in Bar Harbor- go see Acadia- we've rented bikes and went around the wide gravel trails. There are a number of bike shops a few block from the main road, or look them up. I hear now they even have e-bikes you can rent.
St John has a reversing waterfall, because of the tide in the bay of Fundy. We've run over there and taken so long that we've seen it go both directions. I'm sure there is more there.
Then it's Halifax OR Sidney. Both have a town to walk around, but Halifax is better w/o a excursion- there's an old fort withing an walking distance from the port. I wish I could help on excursions, but we rarely do those.
And I also can't help on drinks- we cruise so much we get 6 free drinks a day, and that's more than enough.
Again- if it's the RCI Voyager- the specialty restaurant Giovanni's is pretty darned good. Not free, but really good.
In terms of clothing- do not bother with formal night unless you really want to do it. Use that space for layers. It's New England and Canada in October. We've done cruises where it was really freaking hot and others that it was quite cool and damp there.
Relax, do as much or little as possible (you choose).

We'll be on Norwegian. Thanks for the comments, we'll probably be in the same ports. I've stayed blissfully unaware on this one. She booked the excursions and made all the plans. We'll have a good time, the cruise ship is a new experience for me.
I proposed to my wife on Cavendish Beach in PEI while on a Boston-Montreal cruise, in October even! This was back in 2016, but it was a wonderful time, if not a little cold out on the deck of the boat. PEI and Quebec City were our personal highlights, but Louisbourg Fortress was also really cool from a historical perspective.
