Another vote for either Portland or Austin. Austin surprised me. Great hippie vibe (sat on a dock cross-legged with a bunch of strangers to watch the nightly swarm of bats come out from under the bridge, while someone played bongo drums) and gay-friendly.
Minneapolis/St. Paul. We don't generally care WTF is happening because we're too busy being cold. Gay marriage is legal as of 08-01. I know there's a MASSIVE LGBT community in the area, several clubs/bars and like. Food's good. Plus it has me!
Why are we focusing on lgbt stuff? Curtis is single now, and unless I missed something, loves him some Bob Costas.
Because that was one of his requirements. Plus, if I have any inkling of Curtis AT ALL, I get that the LGBT community is something that may be more accepting of "fringe" folk as it were. Gotta say, I don't know a ton of husband and wife combos sharing a girlfriend. Strangely, this isn't the first one I've heard of. But they're not terribly common- so the more open the community, the more open the community.
I was just in Asheville for a wedding. Great art scene ,good food and beer, there was an LGBT rally that weekend and the 'mountain' scenery is lovely.
I was pleasantly surprised.

Curtis, Sorry to hear this news. In checking out places to move, don't discount the Baltimore/DC/South central Pa. areas. Not as far to move your stuff, strong LBGT communities and a fair representation of GRM members. Good luck wherever you go. I'm just outside of Gettysburg if you come this way.

I have family in that area. If you know people up on the mountain- you can get your hands on some WICKED good homeade hooch. So...I've...heard.

First thought is you are describing Austin. Chattaboogie is really moving up these days. Boulder, Colorado and Santa Fe come to mind too.
Man, I'm sorry. I went through some messed up stuff in my first marriage too, and it ended bitterly.
We tried the DIY divorce approach, to keep things amicable. It didn't work. In fact I don't think it can work. Basically I got berkleyed and we haven't spoken in ten years. We used to be best friends. Hiring a lawyer is expensive, but the only way to go.
As for destinations, it sounds like Ann Arbor, MI this time of year is right up your alley. It isn't too "big city" but pretty much anything goes here. And the weather is perfect right now. The winters suck though.
Like others said Portland sounds like a good fit. I recommend on your way touring the state a bit and exploring what all the state has to offer. We have some truly beautiful natural wonders around here. From the painted hills out east where I am to the pacific coast beaches. We have deserts to rain forests and everything in between. We have some awesome microbreweries even in small towns. Great food and drink is easy to come by. Nature is pretty much universally loved by all in this state. Though in different ways from tree hugging hippies to avid hunters and fishermen to extreme sports folks. Road track in Portland with ovals and drag strips scattered around the state. Older cars can be found with limited rust on the cheap because no road salts are used unlike back east. During the winter you can have rain in Portland and have a crap ton of snow in the mountains.
if you drive through cleveland let me know. i've got a place to park your impala for a while if necessary, right next to mine in the driveway.

Lake Tahoe has some hippy vibe, but probably not as much as it used to. Very tourist based economy and during the season you don't notice much of the hippy alternative vibe. During the off season like now, yes, but for example not as much as you get in more obvious places. Generally it's a very relaxed place[1] and one I personally experienced as pretty tolerant.
Carson City - I don't know. The whole Carson Valley strikes me as rather conservative, but the whole corner is a slightly odd combination of permissiveness and conservative leanings. Lots of retirees, too, mostly from CA, but at the end of the day it's a fairly rural place.
Neither of them has really good seafood, plus we have winters up here - not in the gloomy sense, but in the "it's berkeleying cold out there" sense.
Sorry man. But... looking on the slightly less dreary side - you are sitting on a golden opportunity to do whatever you please. Wander. Disappear. Be someone else. Take chances.
That probably tastes like ashes in your mouth right now but ... get up, get moving and E36 M3 will put itself right.

It really is a good area. The scene is very LGBT friendly, but NC government is not. So if you like being part of the fight, then its great. Either way, good luck finding your new "happy place."

While I don't advocate the bible belt, I think getting away from the alternative lifestyles part is a good idea, for now at least. From an outside view point, that looks to be what caused the downfall. It seams like seeking it out would just put you in a position to have it happen all over again.

I posting lots o smileys because of bible belt being described as non whacko. 
I will agree in concept and say that living a less "fringy" lifestyle tends to get you away from some of the more problem laden people. If its not be the life you want, its not the life you want, but if it is something that is acceptable to you it might be easier on your mental health.

People who have seen both tell me Ann Arbor has very Oregon sort of vibe to it, go there first, try it out, flee when the snow hits. Though the SE quarter of MI is pretty mild as MI winter weather goes.
