In response to the DILYSI post.
While it sure seems like a jerk that was shooting a dog for near sport I can see how something similar could happen, i being the shooter, lemme 'splain.
A dog comes on my property, really DOES growl at my kid. If I had a gun I'd shoot it. If it was badly wounded, like going to die soonish I'm pop it in the head to stop the suffering.
Of course there's no woo-hooing going on, I'd not try to wash away the blood have my mom gather the shells to protect me. I'd go inside and call the cops right away.

Re: Bear spray. Following is a relevant review of Guard Alaska spray. Living here out in the country we have a problem with dogs not being kept under controlled by there owners, mostly pit bulls. The dogs have been trained to chase wild hogs and are very aggressive. My wife while walking has been confronted by some of these dogs regular pepper spray just don't work so hopefully this product will work.Talking to the owners has been useless and so is calling animal control. If this product works it will be saving the lives of these dogs, as the next step will be a firearm.

A co worker many years ago had a situation where he and his family visited some of his wife's family out of town and the hosts had two dogs. One of them attacked my co worker's 2 y/o daughter. The story I heard was that he yanked the dog off of her and then killed it with his bare hands. At the time it seemed extreme to me, but I wasn't a parent then. Now it seems perfectly reasonable.

I will say that a strange dog on my property growling at my kid is in real danger of getting clubbed with whatever is handy. In a situation like that, I don't have time to worry about the subtleties of property lines etc, my kid is my first priority. I would much prefer the dog simply learn a lesson and not come near us again. FWIW, twice dogs have growled at me and I have just plain backhanded them. It surprised them (it was not what they expected at all) and they then gave me a wide berth, which is all I really wanted.

But if it comes down to it, in that sort of situation the dog will die before my daughter would be attacked. No 'woohoo'-ing involved, just straight up self defense.

It's really no different than if someone breaks into my house while I am there. I am not going to worry about the socioeconomic reasons they broke in, I am going to defend me and mine with whatever is handy and if they die in the course of that well sorry they shouldn't have broken in.

In reply to DILYSI Dave:

(avoiding quoting the story)

Sad story. I hate to see dogs hurt. In the story, it sounds like the guy had not shot in defense of his life or harm towards himself or others.

I'm not scared of dogs, but I will shot a dog if it tries to hurt me or others. I would not be happy about it and in fact would probably smudge the body out bless it in some other way. I'm armed about 24/7 and recently had a large dog charge me. My gun was coming out, but the underground fence stopped him.
