Foo. Not a shock at this point, but still sad.
Certainly someone who's left a huge imprint directly and indirectly on my musical landscape.
He bought me a beer between sets at a show in Ann Arbor in 1997. Definitely the king of the surf guitar. RIP Dick Dale.
I flew out to CA once just to see him at the Coach House in Santa Barbara. Seen him many other times closer to home. His live performances you could literally feel the sound waves his shows were so loud.
Such an amazing influence on music over the decades. He may be gone, but his style has influenced countless musicians for decades.
I used to run while listening to the Best of Dick Dale. He nearly killed me every day.
Be very careful working out to Dick Dale.
He was amazing.
I know he was super sick for a long time, and basically kept touring to pay his medical expenses. I'm still sad I missed him.
I’m not a musician by any stretch, but I was always amazed by how much sound he could produce by playing notes and not chords. His fingers must have been setting some sort of tiny land speed record.

That's interesting, as I'm pretty sure that he didn't drink.
Such an amazing musician.
Dick Dales advice to young aspiring musicians: own your music. He learned that through many very painful lessons in his life, I’m sure.
Yeah, very sad news. Can we trace all loud music to Dick Dale? If no Dick Dale, would we have metal, punk, hard rock, etc.? Who before Dick and Mr. Fender gave us huge amplification?
We've been lucky to see him several times over the years. The final time, turns out, would be last year here in Daytona Beach. I can't remember when I first saw him. I thought it was just after graduating college, but a friend once thanked me for taking her to a show in Athens. So maybe we say 1990 +/-.
One of the most memorable shows was a few years ago in Jacksonville at Jack Rabbits. I got to watch the entire show while leaning on his monitor. Couldn't have gotten any closer. Lana, his wife, was always very pleasant as well.
Many years ago we saw him in Orlando at the venue now known as The Social. The openers were okay--just okay--but they were working in. Dick comes out and in just a single chord destroyed his entire set.
One more quick Dick Dale memory. Years ago I was at his web site, and there was a button: "e-mail Dick." So I did, thanking him for visiting Florida on his latest tour.
He wrote me back.
Surf music was a big thing around here as we're surfboards board shapers ,
Velzy pretty much started surf boards in California as Dick Dale started surf music before it was even called that......
Who’s the hmfic now?
We saw him live once, it was right after that shiny happy person dentist shot Cedric the lion and he was talking about how he’d tear the dentist apart with his bare hands, Jamie48442 fell in love right then and there
I will always be glad I got to see him play live in Philly a bunch of years ago. I remember him joking about how his facial expressions were grimaces of pain from the bridge-cables he used for guitar strings.
When I get home tonight, I need to make space in front of my Fender Dual Showman (later version of the amp he used - but still really berking loud), plug in my Strat and crank up a version of Misirlou

Pat Ganahl wrote a pretty interesting article in the Rodder's Journal magazine a few years back about the relationship between surfing, and hot rods and custom cars. Velzy had a few cool cars of his own.

I wouldn't have known who this thread was about if not for that post and this masterpiece of a music video:
RIP
