OK, new puppy, (AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!!) likes to chew. A lot. I want to get her some chew bones, but the vast majority that I find are from China. Wife will not permit those. Anybody have any real input on problems with Chinese chew toys?

I get big ones for my big dog. You should find them at petco in whatever size you need. They will shut the dog up and she will chew on them. We call it, "the pacifier".
There was a news story a while back about poisoned Chinese snacks. I get Ollie rawhide ones from Petco and he has been fine. I am not sure where they are made.
Nylabones. We've had several hard chewers and these things are a life saver. If the dog is really young they have 'puppy' versions that are a little softer, but all ours love the hard nylon type. They are usually scented in some fashion so they are more attactive to chew on. Combined with good training they can help a lot.
The Nylabones are pricey but I won't take chances on cheapo chinese made stuff for that member of the family any more than I'd buy cheapo chinese lead-painted toys for my goddaughter. At least with a big name company they have a reputation to protect even if their products are made elsewhere.
My dog is a chewer but will not touch a nylabone. I haven't had luck with anything, he likes to chew on my hand more than anything.
No info about Chinese dog treats other than the news articles I've read, however, we bought Kongs for our dogs and those toys saved their canine lives. There are differing difficulty levels and you jam a treat into it and the dog has to solve the puzzle to get the treat. Worth every single penny.
The grassroots version that we also had success with was to put treats in stapled-shut paper bags and leave them through the house. That gave them something else to seek and destroy.
Also, if the behavior continues, we put our big scaredy-dog on clomaprimine for a while which got him calmed down.
I bought my son's dog some 3 ft. long chewies, one beef, one chicken and one pork flavored. He chewed 'em all right, but this boy got the worst case of doggie toots!
The Chinese dog treat thing was about jerky strips. I don't think anything was conclusive but it had something to do with the coloring.
Kongs have worked OK for us. Also heavy-duty cardboard tubes (like from a large roll plot). And branches or palm fronds.
our dog likes to chew on a "Kong" it is a rubber toy, i would not give her anything from china, today they found fox meat in their donkey meat, hey dont mess with our donkey meat it is one of their favorite snacks! people not dogs.
We tried a Kong on our Pit rescue about a year ago. When the peanut butter was gone, no interest at all. Guess we will try Petco.
Soak some kibble-type dog food in water. Stuff soggy dog food mix into Kong. Add peanut butter or banana and perhaps a milk-bone. Freeze. Give frozen treat to dog -- should give puppeh something to do for 20~45 mins depending on the size of the kong......and energy level of puppeh.
Fosters and smith sells deer antlers. My lab loves them! They look and feel like stone. Longs are good but he gets bored at times and chews around the opening and wrecks the thing. We buy bones at Walmart and we make sure they are made in America
Our dog (Cavalier King Charles) loves plastic bottles. Instead of throwing them away, we simply give 'em to her, the bigger the better.
In reply to Mmadness:
Put some dog food or smashed up milkbones in the bottle, ups the fun level a notch.
Nylabones and Kongs are great if the pup will take to them, they hold up.
There's been a rash of bad treats, food, etc out of china, avoid it like the plague.
Avoid "greenies" and the like as they get chewed into a pulpy mass which dogs can swallow and choke on.
Natural treats like real bone, pigs ears, etc are good as well.
Kongs last about 12 minutes in our house. Nylabones about 4 minutes.
Deer Antlers. You can buy them online for dog toys. They are usually sold by the pound and not very cheap, but they last for years. The kids will chew for hours and they love them.
We also love the Kongs at our house, and have found that chicken broth frozen in a popsicle mold will fit perfectly in a regular sized Kong and lasts much longer than peanut butter (which is also a favorite). The black Kongs are pretty tough.
Along with deer antlers we use cow hooves. Good for smaller dogs but our larger ones can break them down and then gag on the larger chunks.
I've had pretty good luck with most Kong products. My dog seems to have some sort of plastic allergy, because the nylabone made her chin break out. She loved it, but obviously we had to take it away after we figured it out.
Avoid the rope bones. If your dog is anything like mine, she will shred it, eat it, look uncomfortable for a week or so, then crap out a newly formed rope bone.
For us it's nylabones (luckily she loves them) and marrow bones from the butcher. Once she cleans the latter out, we refill them with kibble + peanut butter. We keep them in the freezer. With the outsides cleaned she works on the middle as it thaws and so none gets anywhere else.
Our dog's got some jaws to her though. Even the heavy duties Kong is lucky to last more than a few minutes. And even massive nylabones don't last very long.
On a semi related note, she loves attempting to chew on whole coconuts. They're just big enough she can't really get her mouth around them, so doesn't break them open. They just kinda pop out as she attempts to bite them.
