I think 1-3 years is kinda light, but at least she was busted.

Scary stuff. If you gave my dog a treat, you could murder me right in front of him. And he'd wag his tail for another treat.
uhhmmmm.... yeahhh....
Dog eats new owner's testicle in Arkansas, then gets euthanized
I used to have a Siberian husky who loved everyone, especially my niece. My ex and I had her for the day, so we took her and the dog to Petsmart. We needed to get food for the dog, and my niece (2 at the time) liked going and seeing all the fish and kitties, etc. Walking around, met up with someone we knew, standing there talking to them, people had been approaching and petting the husky. No worries, she loved everyone. Dude walked up that I was getting a sketchy vibe from and asked to pet her, I said sure, kneels down and starts talking to my niece instead of petting the dog. Dogs hair stood on end, teeth bared, low low volume growl.
Dog straight up walks between my niece and this guy, whole time staring him down and growling. Guy starts to throw a fit about my aggressive dog. Told him to take a hike, she loves everyone except you. Gotta be a reason. GTF Away from us. She calmed down a few minutes later, but dang.... Never had I seen that reaction out of her. Miss that pup, she'd argue with you for hours, wagging her tail the whole time.
yeah ... lots of times dogs (maybe cats too .. ) are better, or at least quicker judges of people than people are
Most dogs seem to have a protective and tolerant thing with children. They'll take abuse from a child that they would attack a grown-up for.

My grandmother had a shephard/malamute mixed male. He loved EVERYONE. The scariest thing that dog ever did was run straight at new people, tongue flying tail wagging. But anytime someone came to the door that she didn't know, he would position his 140lbs of mass between them. If they tried to move around him, he moved too. I loved that dog and so did she.

That's not true, watch this video, it's hilarious.

My last dog, an Akita, was great. She never showed aggression towards humans. But, when I would leave for work she would go on high-alert and be VERY protective of my wife. If someone was around she would keep herself between my wife and anyone else that was around. Even folks that had just been over a few hours before. If the people were strangers she'd stand or sit between them, if she new them she'd lay down, but not sleep. Just keeping tabs. My wife appreciated that.
And my iPhone will growl when a creepy person is near by.

"Arkansas. The New Florida."
In reply to wbjones:
It never ceases to amaze me how sensitive pets can be to our feelings.
Whenever SWMBO would walk the dogs, she'd always comment about how meek and timid Max would ordinarily be. I found that odd, because I had never noticed such behavior.
On the weekend when we could walk them together, she couldn't believe how different he was when I walked him. He puffs his chest out and trots along, occasionally looking back as if asking, "Like this, right?"
It cracks me up.

A former coworker had two rescued German Shepherds that would do the same thing. I think I could have beat him senseless without them batting an eye. But they always stayed between his wife and anyone else who was around (he claimed sometimes even him).
dog's sensitivity to their humans has always amazed me ....
my Mom was watching a tribute to Leonard Bernstein after his death ... she was just sitting in her chair crying ... the dog ( a hugely overgrown Benji type ) crawled up in her lap and started to snuggle and lick her face
Every time I've injured myself and been all a-whoopin' and a-hollerin' about, Trixie, our cat runs to where I am and looks really concerned.
A while back I stepped - full body weight, barefoot - on a 3" construction screw in a piece of wood, pointed up like a Viet Cong improvised weapon. It dropped me like I'd been shot, and I looked at my foot, not comprehending how this piece of wood was now attached.
I pulled it out (which left human jerky on about 1-1/4" of the screw) howled like I'd been shot, then writhed on the floor trying not to pass out as I got all shocky.
Trixie was completely freaked out.
Yessir, nothing like a punji stick to get your attention.
I do believe Binky the Wonder Cat would just go find my will to see what I left him. OBTW: Harve Jacob (the reporter in the original story) is a little bitty guy, there's been more than one story where he's been interviewing some HUGE miscreant and looking more than a little nervous.
