Same here. When they were younger ours would be left out of their crates all day with no issue. But now one of them really likes going on the carpet if we dont pick up on the very subtle hints she drops that she wants to go outside. What a bitch. So now they are both in their crates all day and also when its time for bed.
I'd suggest getting an older dog. I didn't want one until I picked up a great guy at 3- 4 yrs old. Best dog I've had. He was calm. Never destroyed stuff. Got along great with other dogs. Best thing about adopting and adult dog is that it's a known quantity. You know how big they'll get. You know their personality. Win-win.
Another tip, I'd adopt from a rescue org that fosters dogs. They take these dogs into their homes and really get to know them. They'll be able to tell you how the dog acts and what his/her training challenges will be. A reputable rescue org will also offer training tips and will take the dog back if unforeseen problems arise. They should thoroughly check you out for adoption. Some people are put off by this. If so, get a pound dog! Just make sure to check the guy out before adopting. It's a bit more risky but the adoption requirements are much lower.
I'm with the other posters about a more laid back dog. A high energy dog will require more stimulation while a more relaxed dog will be ok being alone for awhile.
