It was recently brought to my attention that the Nissan quest and Mercury Villager are essentially the same van. I'd never really thought about it what has been seen cannot be unseen now. That got me thinking, what other cars have doppelgangers? Here's what i know off the top of my head.
80's Mustang and Capri
Tempo and Topaz
Tracer and Escort
Pontiac G5 and Chevy Cobalt?
Crown Vic and Grand Marquis
Solstice and Sky
Prism and Corolla
Lynx and Escort
I know there must be dozens more, educate me.
Anything made by Geo was made by someone else first.
I think Rodeos and Passports
Swifts and Metros
Prizms and Corollas
Tracker and Sidekick
I was also under the impression that the Nitro and the Wrangler are the same under the skin.
There are tons of re-badged, face lifted chassis mates out there.
Neither Lincoln or Mercury made anything specific to the brand for many years...Now Mercury is going belly up, but Lincoln is starting to have bespoke cars again.

Nitro and Liberty IIRC.
There was also the Caprice/Impala, Talon/Eclipse/Laser, Mx6/Probe (at least under the skin) Neon and Neon, Caravan/T&C/Voyager, the cloud triplets, Suzuki Swift/Pontiac Firefly/Geo Metro, Trooper/Acura...something. Dodge Raider/Mitsu Montero SWB, Dodge Durango/Chrysler Aspen, The suburban/tahoe/Yukon twins, Cavalier/sunfire (sunbird too, depending on how far back you wanna go) and so on down the line. I think I currently own two cars (the ms3 and the MINI) that aren't direct clones, or were cloned to make something else.
Tracer - Escort - Protege - 323 - mx3 - Kia Sephia.
No. Really. Pretty sure i'm missing another Kia variant, as well.

That'd be MX6 - Probe - 626
Also, Contour - Cougar i'm pretty sure.
Ranger/B-series/certain Explorer years
All the Fox body chassis: Mustang/Capri/Fairmont/Zephyr/Mark VII
Samauri/Tracker
Avalanche/Escalade EXT
Camaro/Firebird
Those are the ones I can think of right now.....
Edit: Almost forgot Eclipse and the 2dr coupe Stratus.

In reply to mndsm:
Yeah but the last years of the Cougar (think after MN12 platform), they were basically a two door contour/mondeo/mystique, platform wise.
This thread is dissolving into name cars from a platform, rather than what car with a new badge on the front. Either way its interesting to me.
The MS3 and the Volvo C30 share a lot of DNA, but they're not clones by any means.
My all-time favorite piece of badge-engineered greatness, however...

The Caravan and the Routan - but the Routan has German engineering!

There is an old man by me driving a showroom condition Cimarron. When he's ready to move on I'm hoping to make the step up to a Cadillac.

I think you can add (Ford) Laser to that, too.
Fiat 128 and Zastava Skala.

I wouldn't consider any of those to be a doppelganger, just a twin or clone.
A doppelganger is an evil twin.
So, a more accurate comparison would be the Buick Regal and the GNX. Not sure which one would consider to be the doppelganger though. I suppose it depends on ones perspective.

I dinno man, the GNX never had a moustache, the hallmark of any GOOD evil doppelganger.
could this possibly be the worst offender?

Yep, overseas, the TX3 Laser.
And the Mazda Familia.
