I 84 to I 81 cuts out NYC. Looks like it would be farther though.
I did 95 through CT and NY once. NEVER AGAIN!
My favorite way is 95 -> 495 (or you can stay on 95/128 if it isn't rush hour) -> 90 -> 84 -> 684 -> Saw Mill River Parkway -> 287 over the Tappan Zee -> 78. This is nowhere near as complicated as it sounds, and beats the hell out of dealing with the perpetual traffic jam on 95 in Western CT, and the utter chaos of 95 through NYC and the NJ Turnpike.
Josh has it pretty well nailed. 495 will cut around Boston. You could cut off a little bit of the Mass Pike (90) by taking 290 through Worcester and catching the Pike in Auburn out to 84.
In my experience the chance of hitting traffic in Worcester isn't worth the few miles you might save by taking 290 instead of 90. Plus you'd have to look at Worcester. Yecch.
I agree with you there. I used to work in Worcester - I'd rather dig ditches.
