And when I get there it wasn't the manual trans version I was assured it would be. "Oh we musta sold that last week." Uh huh, thanks buddy.

Consider yourself lucky. I was looking for a stickshift 5, and the closest dealer that has one in stock is 250 miles away.
Still blows though, that's an 80 mile trip to not bring anything home.
I imagine there are people here who have driven a lot further, but this still blows nonetheless.
This one claims to be a 5 speed in Illinois but it has enough miles on to have driven it around the country one time.
A little more than KBB at $65k asking price!

amazing how many salespeople can't even be bothered to look out the window to verify something on a car. i was trying to get a sales guy to verify something as simple as the color of a car once, all he would do is guess. sorry, not good enough for me to make a 1 1/2 hour drive to come see it. couple days later they actually posted pics of it and it wasn't the color he said it was.
I guarantee that chucky thought he could sell you the autotragic one if he got you on the lot and knew damn well the manual one was gone.

Fact!
I emailed a dealer about 40 miles from me asking if they still had a car they had listed on autotrader. They responded with "I think so." Nothing else. Would it be too much trouble to find out before I make an 80 mile round trip to see it?
tl;dr dealers don't know jack E36 M3 about the cars on the lot, or are too dishonest to save you the drive believing that they can sell you something on the lot regardless of what you are looking for.
Also in the news, water=wet.
Yeah I knew it was a distinct possibility but still I was pretty excited to find one that nearby. They for certain did NOT have one "last week" - the photo on Autotrader is of the same auto-equipped one on the lot. The guy was just a boob, or sleaze.
Then I took the opportunity to check out a 73 Mercedes 280c. "rust free" he says, "runs great" he says. Well, the back end was clearly hit hard at some point and the rear fenders were poorly patched with bondo, and it was definitely resprayed poorly. And "well it's not plated or insured right now so I can't let you drive it."
Too bad too - the Mercedes was a really sharp car otherwise. Seemed to run well too, but I think $5500 was a bit too steep.

I.... strongly dislike the majority of humans.
