We've had some good threads on face scrapers and shaving, but I don't think we've had any on electric shavers. Any suggestions?

Rotaries over buzzers.

Rotary shavers are generally quieter, and easier to maneuver. Also are apparently more tolerant of hair that grows in more than one direction. Foil shavers cut closer, but in a bizarre bit of opposite logic, don't berkeley up your face as much (I would assume for the same reason a reel mower is kinder on your lawn, also the circular motion needed to get a close shave with a rotary).

For that reason if I was captured by terrorists and forced to use an electric razor, I'd pick a high-end foil model, possibly a wet-shave model if they make one. That said, here in America, home of the free, I don't have to use such horrible, horrible devices.

If you can tolerate the little "micro-cuts" they all leave, I think you'd be well served with a high-end example of either.

Just FYI, all of the ones that I've tried hurt if I let it go longer than a day. It always feels like they trying to pull the hair out instead of cutting it.

That said, my grandpa (who has much finer facial hair than my wiry bristle) swears by some high end Norelco. I tried it, and it certainly does work better than the low-end Norelco and low-end foil type Remington that my brother uses.

I've never been able to get a buzzer to cut anywhere near as close as a rotary.

Also look at how many cutting "circles" the rotary has. Some have only one and others have as many as 3. Of course the more circles you have the better and smoother the cut.

And yes, going more than a day does end up with hair pulling. I've never found a really comfortable way to cut the beard if you let it go a few days. Scraper & electric are both uncomfortable. If I've grown a beard I've used hair clippers to get it close enough to shave.

I've found that going over & over the same patch again, cause that's what it takes to get it nice & close, is a lot more destructive to my skin than using a scraper, which is why I use both.

I do an easy cut with the electric. Not enough to cause skin irritation and not enough to get it really close all over and then finish up with the blade. That way I get the best of both worlds.

The electric is good around the mouth and on the cleft in the chin and with the beard already being mowed down to half height with the electric it makes the scraper much more comfortable.

I use a modestly priced, corded, 3-rotor. I'm generally pleased with it. No, it does not cut anywhere near as close as a real razor, but it gets the job done.

I find my electric far more comfortable than a standard. My neck is really sensitive and a standard razor always gives me razor burn. The lower quality shave is well worth the tradeoff of not being worried about the discomfort.

I only ever use an electric when I worked like yesterday.. 20 hours out of 24.

I like my 2 rotor norelco. most of the 3 rotors are huge, the little one seems more maneuverable. Haven't seen one in the stores in years.

I used to have a Norelco 3 Rotor back in college that dispensed the "goo" as the commercials used to say, but it did a pretty good job.

My inlaws got me a Braun Series 5 a few Christmases ago. It's a foil razor and it worked well. It had the base with the solution that cleaned your razor for you, but the novelty wore off within 6 months because the replacement fluid was almost 20 bucks and if you didn't use the razor on a daily basis, it was a waste because the fluid would evaporate due to it being alcohol based.
