I was checking some p-codes for another forum member and found my way to the classifieds, where the title of this caught my interest.

hrm. It would have to be ONE HELL OF A MKIV to justify that price. So I clicked through.

I'll say this, the car is clean, aside from the oil leak. You be the judge. Please don't misunderstand, I'm not trying to make fun of this guy, but I'm trying to wrap my mind around how people think they are investing this money, when in fact, they spent it.

What say you, GRM?

If I had a dollar for every ad I've read that said they spent x dollars in maintenance, and simply added that cost to the asking price, I could afford one of them.

I'd say he's managed to build a nice looking (minus the goofy suspension) jetta that will take some doing to find a buyer. Gutted, no hvac, so a miserable driver. Airbag suspension, and not gone far enough for track duty and it needs some head work to boot. As a show car there is cracked paint. He probably has 30k in it. Still doesn't make it worth anything.

Is that the inverse of people who will tally up a car's needed repairs and then try to knock the price down by that much?

I've (fortunately) never had to deal with that, but I've heard it from enough sources to believe that it happens.

I know Elvir. Nice guy, but my god what a retarded price for a stanced hard parker. Nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to a VW enthusiast.

To me it looks like he wants top dollar money for an unfinished car...

And that's about the only thing I can think of that doesn't disagree with his taste.

I always do that, if its priced as something turn key and isnt.

This is pretty much exactly what I thought. Mod costs add up, but this guy clearly priced himself out of the MKIV market, IMO. Plus, most are going to want the built-not-bought title, narrowing the target audience even more.

I'm with you on nothing's surprising, vortex and h-t are the worst offenders in the automotive forum world. They are flooded with people asking $8k for $3k cars.

Good to know Elvir is a nice guy, like I said, I made an effort to not bash his ad. I'd love to be a fly on the wall when this car gets sold. My money is on this car selling for $8k on steelies, and even then it's going to take a long while to find a rich kid looking for something like this.

My bet is on it getting stripped to a shell and parted out when no one will buy it as is.

Have we met?

Unfortunately a lot of people tend to go "KBB + x or bust" no matter that their car needs a new engine. Sometimes one needs to start haggling like that.

I will say Vortex is one place where one might advertise something at an insane price with little expectation of getting it because...

1) it has a large audience and ads are free and...

2) there's a lot of idiots amongst the Vortex readership (there's a sucker born every minute)

I can't judge the seller.

When I bought the Manic Miata about 2-3 years ago, I paid about double what a stock, rust-free but definitely not cherry 100k-mile '96 Miata was worth, for a car with probably $10,000 (retail new) of stuff on it. I probably overpaid by $500.

FTFY

The chances of some hipster vortex idiot buying that is so slim. Let's say he got knocked down to even $10k, there is so few people on that website that have the cash to buy it and they certainly cannot get a loan for that old of a VW for $10k.

So it's got a stripped interior and a non-functional "cage." It also has roughly 5mm of suspension travel.

Fail.

Yeah but some stance-lovin' VW fanboy will buy it for that price and make sweet love to it every night. In fact on VWvortex, it will probably be sold within the week. To that crowd this is an amazing work of art.

Those wire tuck jobs blow my mind. Not something that's important to me, but the work involved has gotta be kinda crazy. I have to wonder how close to the engine's radiant heat the wires and hosing has to be though.

Tucking the wires is time consuming, but not that difficult to do. If he rerouted/tucked hoses, thats just a world of problems waiting to happen.

In reply to GameboyRMH:

Yeah but I agree with Anti-stance that most people on Vortex are broke. Now if it had a burberry interior...
