The early 530i (3 liter V8) had, apparently, horrible bore erosion issues, to the point that BMW was reblocking engines under warranty.

They changed the bore coating, and problems reduced considerably.

 

Audi V8s (the timing belt engines) also had bore erosion issues, but mainly with long OCIs allowing acids to eat the bores.  Audi did not even sell main bearings for this engine, it was serviced as an assembly...  There is a small group of people figuring out how to resurface the bores on their old S8s.

I had a '94 530i. BMW extended the waranty on the engine to 7 years from inservice date.  I took mine to the dealer at 6 years 11.5 months past inservice date because it had started to have an initially rough idle when cold.  BMW replaced the block with one with alusil bores.  At the time, there was some speculation that a contributing factor to the nikasil failure was low S content of US gas vs. Euro gas.  I think the Chevy Vega was the first car to use alusil.
