you know you don't love, but is part of job transition into an exploding market and you must stay in for another year or two to be saleable to another company in said industry....
I went from Aerospace to Tech/E-Commerce.. Yup.. I'm in a transition phase. Wow.. is it tough. I went from running a factory to being an individual contributor. Should pan out in the next 10 years though.... :-)
That is all.
Kind of in the same boat.
I'm designing the development cycle/process and architecture for reuse/storage/design for all the manuals for a 9 digit company.
I figure I've got another 2-3 years to put in here to get 1-2 more promotions and take what I'm doing beyond my current proof of concept.
I have plenty of experience in working through tough transition phases, but none in jobs with future potential

I thought I was but I ended up in the "soul sucking run by idiots phase" instead. This place used to be a well run tightly managed ship. To save money people have been promoted that have little experience or knowledge of what should go on here. That anyone gets where they are going seems to be an afterthought but that's a rant for another day.

I work in Aerospace and don't know that I'll ever leave the "individual contributor" phase.
Honestly I'm starting to hate engineering. For the last couple years I've watched people hired at the same time as me promoted and given group leadership responsibility. Some of that is probably the org I'm in, some of that is surely me, and I'm not sure what to do about it. And the best part is feeling trapped in this industry because it's where all of my professional work experience is.
Sorry to derail your thread but this has been hanging over me for a couple months and I'd like to try again somewhere else but I'm not finding traction in getting a really "right" job.

Soul sucking run by idiots Tech field crew checking in. Was really hopeful for that explosion but I don't think it's ever happening. Will probably go do something I enjoy more and get paid less and I'd almost rather that honestly.
BTQT. Been there, quit that. I wasn't willing to stick it out. The misery wasn't worth the money to me, so I took a major pay cut, changed tracks and started over.
Life is to short to hate waking up in the morning.
I have a BIL in the engineering world. He's head of quality control at a major manufacturer and stuck in the money rut, but hates his job. Makes me glad I never wanted to be one.
Good luck Iggy.

People are always stabbing and stealing. It's not pretty but it's job security.

Wow guys. I do feel for you. I had a job with the same issues I'm hearing about here.
A little over a year ago I switched from a Quality Engineer at a dead end medical device company ( they have since been bought out) to a staff Process Improvement Engineer at a dietary supplement company. It was a lateral move with some risk. Was promoted to manager within 5 months. Get to build my team. I have responsibility for process improvement, compliance (FDA, but just for operations), equipment qualification, and inventory. I love going to work everyday. This company is a leader in the industry and is growing fast.
I have to encourage you. Make a change if you are not happy at work. It is amazing how much better all other areas of your life become. MAKE A CHANGE!
The first job I took out of college was definitely a springboard. I had already been with the company for 10 years, so it was a new way of looking at the same old problems. It was a stifling atmosphere, but that last job gave me the skillset to move onto better things, which I did earlier this summer. For all of my 11 years with my first company, I was always looking for what's next. Now, I want to savor the present.

I enjoy my job but, like Wally, I see decisions made that boggle the mind on a daily basis. Proactive they are not.
Management. By. Crisis.
Other than that and my schedule I'm pretty happy and am definitely not planning to transition into another field.
This last job transition was tough.. By my early 30's I had worked myself into the spot to be in line for a plant manager. Got some phone call out of the blue of a tech giant.. 50% pay raise.. I'd be stupid to not give it a shot.. But man.. as I get older that learning curve gets steeper.
It will lead to something better though. I truly enjoy the marriage of Customer Service and Ops... That's where I a hovering now.
Sort of in the same spot.
Left a company that I liked after being their for 18 years. Was part of their transition from a money hole to a profitable company, in less than stellar market. Off to another company that seems to have all the same problems my last when did when I started working for them.....tough to stomach knowing how long it took to correct bad habits at the last place on the way to success. I'm almost one year in, at the new gig....still a long way to go.
Been here two years. Paid 20% less than BLS says my degree should get me and I commute into downtown DC.
Only sticking around because I am near the head of the line to get a much better job with the agency I am a contractor at.
If I make 3 years I am going to be reevaluating and attempting to move on out of here.
i work jobs to make money.. if i like the job and the people, that's just a bonus.
