Ever start a small project and end up involved in a week-long rebuild?

Some of you might have seen my subwoofer enclosure thread. Innocent enough, right? I had the materials. Build them. Even if I don't put them in anything I have, I could sell them for a profit.

Wrong.

96 Impala SS. Years ago I had two amps powering 6.5" separates up front and 6x9 in the rear deck. Some douche (way back in 2008 or something) broke into my car to steal the ridiculously pathetic old JVC head unit I had in it. At the time, I just put the factory stereo back in to get tunes. But... the wiring was already run if I ever decided to go back. So I set the enclosures in the trunk. They are perfect, except for the undulating and uneven trunk floor. So I decided to take the time to level out the floor with MDF and spacers.

Long story short... because I built those enclosures, I have now ordered a new head unit, sirius XM add-on, two more amps to run the front and rear, built a baffle for behind the rear seat with holes to pass wires through invisibly, 1/0 wire to power everything, upgraded the fuse holder for a 100 amp fuse, painted, coated, cut carpet, and otherwise revamped the whole bloody thing.

This was just going to be build some enclosures. Then it was going to be use an existing amp and drop them in the trunk. Now its let's tear apart the entire car, add XM, three amps, new supply wire, raise the floor, do some sound deadening...

But it is going to sound so sweet. 8 speakers ranging from 10" to 1", 3 crossover points, 1500 watts.

I put some subs in the back of an Impala once for a client. This was not my choice of fabric.

I once started a "3-week" project to rebuild my turbo Miata's engine...

Five years later, ummm...

glad to hear the impala getting worked on, mine is just sitting out in front of the garage with a cracked head. i did fire it up, move it, and do a massive burnout a couple weeks ago.

My boss decided to replace the rusted out spare tire well in his 2002 with a flat sheet of steel.

Things got out of hand.

Add a simple closet in the basement, end with a complete basement renovation.

Don't ~all~ projects go that way?

Only a week? Any project I attempt usually ends up mostly functional, yet still officially unfinished years later. Gotta work on that. . .

one friday night in the end of february of 2003, i got bored and walked out to my unheated shop and popped the hood on my fully intact, fully functional 71 Nova.. i took the air cleaner off for some silly reason, and 5 hours later i had this in my shop:

i'm not exaggerating when i say that everything that bolts to the bottom of the car- subframe, rear end, gas tank, brake and fuel lines, everything- was scattered around my shop. and not a single bolt was broken- i fell in love with the idea of getting cars from California on that evening...

this got me motivated to start buying the pieces i needed to do the suspension rebuild, and about a month and a couple of thousand dollars (somehow) later i was at this stage:

so, yeah, it happens..

Replacing exhaust manifold gaskets on my F-250 turned into a top-end rebuild and Banks Powerpack install.

I did that once, and then i bought another car instead.

No bloody comment.... I still have several of those projects littering my yard, the woods around my yard and my actual shop.

Went out to ghetto rig an intake for the miata, which lead to a timing belt\water pump, which lead to a VVT head swap, which lead to megasquirt

I must have needed to drill a hole in something, which led to me buying a 1940s Atlas/Craftsman drill press to restore, which led to turning my dining room into a workshop.

I don't even remember what I needed to drill.

I finish all my projects the day I start them and never deviate from the plan.

If you believe that, I have some ocean front property we need to talk about in Arizona.

All too often... which is why I have more unfinished projects than I can count. It's gotten to the point where I am loathe to start anything because I just KNOW it will escalate into some massive project.

It all started when I went out to replace a broken bolt on an alternator bracket...I realized that by the time I actually replaced the bolt I had spent $2000 on various items including $300 in powdercoating.
