This dude can make a bass do amazing things.

Kind of a mess if you ask me, and the memorable bits were destroyed by that berkeleying horrible chorus-saturated 80's tone.
Not a "solo" per se, but three motherberkeleyers I'll never be anywhere near as badass as:

I'm sure there's a big ole pile of Ron Carter, Stanley Clarke, Billy Sheehan, Jaco Pastorius, Les Claypool, et al. on youtube as well. I just don't know that I've ever heard a bass SOLO where I didn't walk away going "Nice groove followed by a bunch of forced-feeling slap & pop. They certainly followed the formula."

It gets weird, then it gets bizarre, then you throw up your hands and wonder what the hell he's doing...
Poop, I guess my 80s is showing. I grew up with that 80s sound. Well, that and Hee Haw.
Paul Gilbert was outstanding, I ended up watching several of his videos. A littler harder than I like, but definitely great players.
David, Metallica was never one of my favorites. You either get metal or you don't and I guess I don't. I think is moves faster than my brain and ears do. I was all about AC/DC, Van Halen and like when I was younger, but I'm leaning more toward blues now.
This is more my speed anymore.

I'd say that the best would have to be Weather Report's Birdland:

Also a big fan of Victor Wooten from Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.

I love the bass player, but those guys are bizarre.
The videos are hilarious.
Edit: You want funky? You gots funky! Louis Johnson live!
Then there's this... Bootsy's spaced-out solo
Can you tell I'm a bassist?
Go to Youtube and listen to some old Motown songs with James Jamerson on bass. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Jamerson
I like his work, and "Leave that thing alone" is great. I still wonder what that poor bass did to deserve that outburst.
And after watching this, I don't think I'll ever be able to play one worth anything.

My fingers aren't that quick.
If you want amazing bass PARTS, I'll blow your mind, melt your face, and make you cry. Solos? Again, they're generally kind of cheesy IMO. In the context of a song, either everyone else needs to get really quiet, or you've got to add a ton of gain/volume and play above the 12th fret to cut through the mix (burton,) at which point, why don't you leave that part for the instruments that were designed to sing? I love the bass. I play the bass (starting in orchestra in 6th grade, playing electric in a minutemen-esque band a bunch of years ago, etc.) Let the bass do what the bass does. Exception: Claypool. :) But at that point, you gotta have a guitar player like larry to provide a big, weird, background for you to paint on. Still, you've gotta come with that super high gain/volume and play up top.
I'm buzzed. And rambling.

listen to the whole Master of Puppets album on a good set of speakers.. just close your eyes and listen to what Cliff Burton is doing on the bass, just kind of drowned out in the background behind all the other glorious noise.. that whole album is built on awesome bass grooves, with Orion being just freakin' awesome.. also, while you are listening to Cliff Burton's stuff, give a listen to The Call of Ktulu on Ride the Lightning...
The Call of Ktulu is pretty boss. Sadly I never got to see Metallica when Burton was alive, but I'm a big four-string fan and have been lucky to see most of my other favorites live: John Entwistle, Geddy Lee, Steve Harris, Les Claypool and Robert Trujillo.
poopshovel wrote:Steve HarrisThat's that motherberkeleyer who got me interested in playing bass in the first place.
Steve Harris, Geddy Lee & Chris Squire were the 3 who taught me that bassists didn't need to stand in the dark next to the drummer, while mindlessly thumping along behind everyone else.
