listen to the whole Master of Puppets album on a good set of speakers.. just close your eyes and listen to what Cliff Burton is doing on the bass, just kind of drowned out in the background behind all the other glorious noise.. that whole album is built on awesome bass grooves, with Orion being just freakin' awesome.. also, while you are listening to Cliff Burton's stuff, give a listen to The Call of Ktulu on Ride the Lightning...
Headphones. Way better than speakers.
If you are a real weirdo (like me) you'll find that people have posted to YouTube JUST the guitar tracks, or JUST the bass tracks, of various Metallica songs. Bass-only Orion is pretty sweet.

That's that motherberkeleyer who got me interested in playing bass in the first place.
I love how he sings--even though he doesn't have a mic.

Ditto. Frank Bello is another seriously underrated, insanely energetic, MONSTER player. That dude gets around like somebody half his age. On a bigger stage, our Bass player Tim is a maniac too. I've seen people get scared he's going to launch himself into the crowd when he does a running jump onto a monitor.
True, Bello is fun to watch. When we saw Anthrax earlier this year, Scott Ian was out sick--in the hospital, even. They did the show with just four guys. Bello seemed to enjoy the extra space.
Some prime Bello--and with blond hair:

By the way, a million years ago I saw Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe, and Tony Levin kicked ass.
Oh yeah, duh, Wolfgang Van Halen does a killer job, too. I saw him with Tremonti a year ago at the PRS open house. I guess Wolfgang had joined the band a day or two earlier--a total last-minute thing. Anyway, he just quietly did his thing. He looked like he was late for high school. No disrespect to the rest of the band, but I think he stole the show.
