The place I recently bought came with a horrible stinky carpet in the garage. Today my brother in law helped me remove the carpet, but we were left with this layer of glue/adhesive (I guess it might be mastic?). We tried pouring boiling water on it and scraping, but it didn't really do much (some came up, but not completely, and it would be highly labor intensive to continue that way).

So now I guess I have 2 options, either some kind of chemical stripper, or renting one of these oscillating floor scrapers. Anyone have experience with either option? I'm leaning floor scraper, unless it won't work for some reason.

Floor paint over it?

Edit: Due to potential asbestos content, I would not sand/scrape that without getting it tested. I always forget how much random stuff used to be loaded with it, often a lot later in time than you would think. If use of asbestos in a product wasn't specifically banned at some point (e.g. popcorn ceiling) often times it was used into the 90s, sometimes later.

Depending on the age of the "mastic" it may contain asbestos so proceed with a certain degree of caution.

Otherwise I'd try chemical softener of some sort first, then scrape it up with a putty knife (8" drywall knife actually). Sanding and scraping a dry adhesive will make you curse too much.

I have no idea if it will touch that stuff, but I've had good luck with their products in the past.

Yeah, a small one. As far as asbestos, from what I could tell some mastic had it until about 1982, and this carpet was from around 2000, so I'm pretty sure it's ok. It was just nasty because somebody had a cat that lived in there, as well as a leaky old fridge.

This is THE E36 M3 you're looking for.

A couple years ago, I redid a floor that was tiled, and had to remove mastic. I got this stuff from a Contractor Supply place.

It's soy based. It stinks, but not in a chemically-I-can-smell-the-color-9 way; more of a compost stink.

Pour it on, spread it out, let it soak, scrape it off, rinse.

Great, thanks!

I guess I need to figure out whether or not this is mastic I have. I have a feeling it's actually just indoor/outdoor carpet adhesive like Roberts 6700 or whatever you can buy at the Home Depot.

Whatever it is, BEAN-e-doo will more than likely remove it.

You'll need to log in to post.
