My town does excise tax according to Blue Book, so we get crushed on that tax. We also pay the state sales tax up front on car purchases.

...and the state is broke. My town is coming out of brokeness, though. The mayor actually did a good job.

Michigan does the same, but across the board lump sum 6%. I've never payed more than $400 for a car private party, or so the state thinks.

i'm excited at registering my cars for TX here in not to long... even after you figure in the cost for emissions testing/inspection it's MUCH cheaper than it was in FL... my s10 is old enough that it'll get tagged as an antique... $55 for a 5 year tag ;-)...

insurance is also MUCH cheaper here...

I just do the Steve Jobs trick so I dont worry about tags.

It's not the 6% that kills me. My benz was about $3K. But, the original MSRP was $42K. My yearly tag renewal is based on that 42K price. I think last year my tags were $290+. So yeah, every year I'm paying a 10% tax on a car I purchased years ago.
