Kids are awake and wiggling around in the next bedroom over. They can't get up for another 33 minutes. We have rules! In the spare minutes I thought I'd start this annual GRM fun thread. I think I just got socks, but we'll see in half an hour.

When my sons were little we told them not to come out of their rooms until the lights on the Christmas tree were lit. Santa would turn them on as he left the house. They never did find the timer.

This was the first year ever where wife and I were up before (14 year old now) daughter.  We actually had to wait until almost 9 to open presents!  Other years were 6 am or so ....

But, she seems to have embraced the saxophone she received, as she wanted to expand beyond the clarinet.  So far, sounding good !!

Oh, and I got a Dewalt 20 volt brushless drill plus impact driver combo kit.  Which is nice!

The upgraded belts and stepper motors for the 3d printer I bought myself.

A real mattress again after 3 years of air mattresses.

To watch my kid tangle herself up in fishing line, which was probably the best part.

Son got a GTX 1070 ti

Daughter got a seagull guitar (that dad is really stoked about)

Mrs Dean got a bunch of small stuff. I let the kids loose in TJ Max and they came back with a cart full of stuff for Mom.   Everything from pink coat hangers to candy.

I got a new cookbook. Now that may not sound like much but there is a bit of a story behind this making it extra special to me.   I have been using my great grandmothers cookbook for years. It was falling apart when I got it thirty years ago.  It is a 1890s edition. My daughter found a used copy on line that is in pristine condition. I am going to transcribe the notes over from my mom, grandmother and great grandmother in to the new one and then keep the original safe and preserved for future generations.

I was making apple peach pie For thanksgiving  with my daughter. The recipe was written in the books margin by my great grandmother as a amendment to the apple pie recipe in the book. I showed my daughter this and then showed her the other cool stuff in the book. Basically notes and things passed down from people long gone. I think my daughter really got it. I had casually mentioned my want to get a new copy and do the transcriptions noting on them whose notes they were. I never thought she would be able to find the book. I have looked on and off and they are not usually available and when they are they are destroyed. The copy she got me looks to be the original printing that was in a library as it has the stamp from a library on the inside cover.  Probably why it was in such good condition.

Anyway this is a special present to me. Completely unexpected.

I got to see my 2.0s faces as they got their gifts. My oldest and the Legos, and my youngest and the trampoline.  Being a dad is the greatest gift ever.

I even got a coffee mug that says I’m the greatest dad ever.

Awesome.

I bought myself an engine hoist and accessories. But that was because I needed it. My wife got me a Lego Saturn V rocket and it looks amazing. I told her “you know this is going to end up in the kids LEGO right? And she said that was fine but hoped I would get a chance to build it at least once.. I think so.

My oldest is 3 this year so finally old enough to start to really get into it and man did she ever. She was pumped. I’m the youngest of 5 and we had our kids late so they’re the only little ones with 15 people around so it can get a bit out of hand. Fortunately people didn’t go too crazy. She ended up with 11 new Elephant and Piggie books which she adores. And a new leap reader and 10 books for that. (Those things are really cool!) The best part was just seeing her enthusiasm and excitement about each thing. She must have said “ooh, that’s my favorite!” a half dozen times.

Now comes cleanup and I hope I can still get to my garage for a bit tonight.

Oh man, I read Elephant and Piggy to my littles so many times!!!  Good memories :-)

Enjoy every minute.  (I say as I'm watching Fast and Furious (2009 episode) with my oldest 2 as Tiger Mom snoozes on the couch)

They grow up fast!

A wonderful breakfast followed by surfing with family and friends, and quite a bit of time reading a book on the couch. This is the first year of having my sister's new husband here as a part of the celebration, and I think it has gone really well so far. Very glad to see him meshing well with the family, and seeing them happy together. Our gift exchange is tomorrow, however I think it has already been a great, relaxing Christmas.

I received a 4 1/2” angle grinder from my boys and when I opened it, I realized someone bought it, used it and returned it!!

There’s grinding dust and scratches all over it. Back to HD after the holidays.

The boys are 14 and 11 and they are still up before 7 am to open their gifts.

I got some sweet Carhart bibs. Some nice corningware dishes. Some Medium Tall sized sweaters.

And some work to do:

This was about 8:30am yesterday. This is the tree I cut down the weekend before thanksgiving in the northwoods of Wisconsin.

My wife was quite unhappy on the lifespan of this tree and was really pushing me to take it down a week or two ago. It looked better before we started removing the decorations.

I got a Canon 80D with the 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens about 3 weeks ago so I wasn't expecting anything under the tree, other than usual underwear and socks.  However, Jewels surprised me (pretty rare since I usually know/figure out what I'm getting) with a new pair of hiking boots, Asolo 520 GV, my 3rd pair of the same boots now in 20 years.

The in-laws got me another 12 Months of Amazon Prime.

Last night at my folks I got an Anova Sous Vide that I'm pretty stoked about, and a Milwaukee metal cutting saw.

I'm spoiled, and super lucky to have such a loving and generous family.

Got 3 different "hot beverage" mugs, one is shaped like the death star which is great. Couple socks and a shirt. And my parents got me a skateboard because I never seem to grow up, but I love it. I even went out back and did some trampoline skating before assembling the deck. I remember it took much less energy to do that when I was 15.

I'm lucky. My parents and her parents are both close so we got to see everyone. My boy is still too young (17 mo.s) to care about presents but he liked seeing cousins and everyone and running around and playing. We went to the church parking lot down the street and fired up my drift trike. I thought my mom was going to crash, and my kid brother burned himself on the muffler but mostly it was fun and laughter filled. Then we ran out of gas and went home and ate a dead bird.

It was a really nice day.
