Starting from Ohio and am planning on spending the night someplace in the middle.  Anyone have any suggestions for cool things to see on the way down?   I have not settled on a route yet so am open to anything as long as it is not too far out of the way.

Thanks

BMW factory in Spartanburg SC or NCM in Bowling Green KY depending on which way you go.  World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta is also pretty cool.  Maybe the Tail of the Dragon?

Naturally, the entire Orlando area is built around attractions for 11 year olds, if that's your thing?

Also, Orlando is relatively close to Cape Canaveral, if your 11 year old is like I was when I was 11.

I haven't been in years, but i would suggest not staying in the infield with your 11 year old.

U.S. Space and Rocket museum in Huntsville Al.  Very affordable for children and adults...very interesting for all ages.  Has shuttle display and mock up of space station.  Lots of hands on displays.  Not as crowded as Canaveral.  Good back road drving to go there.

Really is a half day minimum attraction...better for almost full day.  Pretty straight shot from Delaware OH either thru nashville or lexington ky routes.  Nice thing about lex route is chattanooga hills.  About 500 miles either route.

In reply to John Welsh :

I don't plan on doing anything in Orlando this trip.  I am sure he will be wiped out by the WEC and IMSA races.

I took him, his older brother and my Dad to the last ALMS Sebring 12 hours in 2013.  We didn't stay at the track that time and a family friend winters in FL about 45 minutes from the track so we are staying there.

What route do you plan to take down?

From my house there too is not much of a time difference though I would not have thought for you the time is exactly the same.

I generally dislike the I-75 route because I dislike Cincinnati and Atlanta traffic.    The two are 7 hours apart so if you hit Cinci at 9:30pm so as to avoid rush hour you then arrive at Atlanta at 4:30pm which gives you the worst of the worst.

The route toward West Virginia means that the only really big city you endure is Charlotte, NC.  For that route, Charlotte, NC also becomes your midway point .  I would try to get just south of it in day #1 and then that traffic is behind you for the trip and the rest of the way is reasonably clear.

The last time we went down the WV route and stayed in Savannah and then came back through Atlanta because we stayed with an Army buddy of mine.  I really just wanted to know if there are any cool museums to hit on the way down just to break up the  time in the car.

I am also looking at maybe taking Amtrak down and renting a car.  I like traveling by train and think Tyler would enjoy it,

After Atlanta, on the return home it is only a slight deviation to go to Nashville where the Lane Motor Museum is located.  I have not been there but what I read here says its great.

Continuing north from there will send you through Bowling Green KY and the Corvette Museum.  Just north of there, still in KY, south of Louisville is Fort Knox which aside from Gold also has the George Patton Museum.

Next north is Louisville and the Louisville Slugger Museum and plant tour.  Also in Louisville is a Muhammad Ali Museum.

That is some very varied choices in a short stretch.

Huntsville is also the location of Space Camp.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Space_Camp  This might be a good fact finding mission and general introduction if you might be interested in future summers of Space Camp.
