40s? That's cargo short and hoodie weather in New England😁

I get the mixed feelings people have about lined jeans. I have a pair of these that I like for hockey rink and outdoors in the cold, when snow pants aren't an option.

edit: for a jacket, my go to for everyday use in the Dec-Mar time is from Bean. I have a ski jacket with zipper fleece liner for snow sports, but this strikes a good balance between warm, bulk, and durability. I think I bought it 3-4 years ago at the outlet and no complaints so far: Utility jacket

I have two pairs of lined jeans for when it goes below freezing. One pair is fleece lined and the other flannel lined. My normal winter jackets are just typical light, down-filled puffy ones. They're nice and thin and light, but for all day outdoors I have an LL Bean "Maine Forest Ranger " coat from 20 years ago. You can nap in a snow bank in that thing, and best of all, it was only $25 at a local thrift store and looked brand new.

Hockey game at Comerica Park a few years ago. It was a really cold day....
