Either gages or gauges is accepted. Guages is not.

Gages in the large bore cannon producing world, guages for welding supplies. Dunno about space ships.

And if you think about it.. how long would the captain of the shuttle actually have to sit on that? once they hit orbit, it's all microgravity

I mean, I am sure take off is uncomfortable enough, but you gotta realize, 99% or more of mission time is spent in weightlessness, so not the biggest deal in the grand scheme of things...

Looks a bit like a submarine ship's control panel, especially with the curtains covering the windows.

The pilots face straight up on takeoff too, right? So it seems like a comfortable seat back would be much more important than seat bottom.
