So I'm looking to build an HTPC/video recorder for my wife.  I'm familiar with Tiger Direct and Newegg.  Are there any others worthy of consideration?  Where do all the cool kids shop for computer components?

Amazon sometimes beats the other two on price (and often do on shipping).  If you have a Microcenter local, they often beat online stores.

Build the machine on pcpartpicker.com, it'll tell you about the cheapest source for the parts and warn of any incompatibilities.

I do all my computer shopping on Newegg and Amazon.

Fry's electronics has(at least last time I built one) great prices for a brick and mortar store, if there's one in your area.

I'm 99% going to buy online.  Brick and mortar retail is dead to me.  Cause of death was suicide.

Subscribed-- can't stop thinking I want to do build a media server myself.

I keep monitoring this web-site for his pending updates to his builds for this year.

I just built a kick but gaming PC with my son. I don’t remember the site but it let you build a PC and then it would show you the cheapest places on the web to by the parts.  I ended up getting almost all of it from Amazon. There no question return policy and free shipping was worth the $20 difference on $1,400 in parts. And I got points on my amazon prime account so it was probably cheaper. Also with prime you get things in two days.

That site is PC Part Picker.  Also warns you about incompatibilities between parts.

My new gaming PC was sourced 99% from Micro Center. You can shop online, but I'd check for a store nearby if you can. They price match.

That's it I could not remember the name. I also get things from micro center. They are usually pretty good on pricing.  They have great prices on reverbs and open box stuff.

Nearest Micro Center is 2 hours up I-95.  I used to source all my parts from a local systems builder, but he's closed up shop.  Stores like Best Buy are a joke.  They don't want to sell parts.  I get it.  I shop online.  Best selection, best price, and the unbeatable convenience of having the stuff delivered to your door instead of driving across town only to find out they don't carry (or just sold out of) the item you want.

About the only thing I don't buy online is groceries.
