An instance of one of the E9Ams escaping commuter service. This locomotive isn’t in Illinois but rather in Great Falls, Montana to provide HEP for a BN executive hunting trip in nearby Lewistown that involved a number of business cars. The E had just been moved inside this former Great Northern diesel house and you can still see exhaust lingering in the air.

The #9925, the last of the 25 E9Ams built. They started at #9900, so how is #9925 the last of 25? Well, there was no #9909. Although all classed as E9Am, there were a few small differences which remained depending on whether they started as an E8 or E9. So, the units built as E8s were numbered starting at #9900 while the E9s (Burlingtons entire fleet of that model, impressively intact until 1992) started at #9910. The first round of rebuilds in 1973-4 included all the E9s plus E8 rebuilds #9900-9904. In 1978, four more E8s were done which filled the #9905-9908 roster slots. That's why there was no #9909.

When BN/Metra replaced the E9Ams, some of them actually went east to the Maryland Area Rail Commuter, and ran there, still in BN colors but renumbered and with MARC patch lettering.

IRM has one of the E9Ams that went to MARC. The #92 was built as an E8A for the CB&Q as the #9976, then worked as a Chicago commuter locomotive as BN #9908. This unit has regained it's BN number and lettering since, and is currently undergoing a long term restoration back to CB&Q E8A #9976. Metra F7A #308, also at IRM, was built as C&NW #4083C, then was the C&NW #414. The #308 is operable and is not on the short list for restoration at this time, with long-term restoration in a C&NW scheme not yet decided on.

IRM also has another BN E9Am, which was the #9919, before becoming BN-3 for use in their executive fleet, along with a heavily rebuilt FP9A (BN-1) and FP9B (BN-2). Reportedly another E9Am was assigned BN-4 but was never renumbered, repainted, or used. IRM ended up with BN-1, BN-2, and BN-3.
