GRM beer tasting

With all the beer fans here, I think it would be fun to have a weekly (?) online beer tasting. Rotate around and pick a beer that's generally available and a bunch of us share tasting notes and impressions, wine tasting style. Any takers?

That is an AWESOME idea. I am in like Flynn.

We either need to find widely distributed beers or break it up into a couple regions, like East/West Coast.

Now the tough question is: where do we start? What should the first beer be? How do we decide? I think weekly is a good rate to do them at.

I think executive decision on beer selection. One person chooses and we take turns after that. Since Pigeon came up with the idea, I think he should make the first choice.

Uh, even better: grassroots beer exchange.

I'd be game, I have a local take-out place with a couple hundred bottles to choose from...

I figure start with something that is a bit more common and accessible. I wish we could pull off a beer exchange, but those are hard enough with personal friends, let alone an online community. My friends and I once came within one case of a perfect beer exchange, but one guy bailed an hour before it started. Otherwise, we had 23 unique cases, it was amazing...

Off the top of my head, the following can be found almost anywhere:
AB and assorted products, Miller/Coors and assorted, Sierra Nevada, PBR, Leinies, Heinekin, Becks, Carlsburg, Dos Equis, Shiner, Corona, Sam Adams, and Fat Tire.

Possibly the following:
New Glarus, Great Lakes, Goose Island, more craft beers.

I'd suggest starting with one of these, and then figure out what the next few weeks if we want to get into "better" beers that might be harder to find. Between these beers mentioned, we have at least a year of beer, and at least 15 weeks of what I would consider "good" beer.

Better Ideas.

I would suggest things like: Dogfish Head 60 minute IPA, anything by Unibrau, Bodingtons, Arrogant Bastard, Allagash, Chimay.

Yeah, you might need to go a little bit further out of your way than the local grocery mart, but there aught to be a good liquor store in your region that carries them.

I'm in also, but a write up of the selected beer should be a part of the nomination even if it is lifted from the suppliers website.

I will have trouble finding many of the interesting ones but am willing to take on the challenge. (Damn podunk towns)

I am in, sounds like fun. Plus, for my 40th birthday a couple of weeks ago my wife went to World Market and got me 40 bottles of beer, 28 different kinds.

This is a capital idea.

We might also consider a weekly theme rotation:

Week 1: General domestic beers (Sam Adams, etc)

Week 2: General import beers (Moosehead, Dos Equis, etc)

Week 3: Regional domestic beers

Week 4: Local Micro-Beers (aka: free for all)

I didn't realize Hoegarden was AB. Not too surprised though. I've got no problem with that, Peroni, or Blue Moon. I guess I should say that I'd like to limit it to craft beers. Something like Pilsner Urquel might even be interesting.

The only issue with craft beers is avaliablity.

I really like this idea. Makes a bit more sense than all of us trying to find the same beer. I think a weekly theme and target one or two breweries within that theme would be good. The crazy beer afficianados among us can try a seasonal or special release and people in areas of limited selection can still find a flag ship.

I think Sierra Nevada and Sam Adams are a perfect two breweries to start with.

Pilsner Urquel is, IIRC, a Miller product these days. Or at least imported by them. These nicer beers owned/imported by the big boys are more than likely available everywhere.

I agree with this statement.

I think we can work around must the "issues."

Another way to do it would be for everyone to pick a beer they want to try and post a review so others can try it if they can find it.
