so I saved my ebay money and bought a camera.
Canon 10.0 XS Rebel with telephoto lense extra.
I am pretty happy. I went to look at a wide angle lense for taking car pictures. nice - except for the $779.79 price on the lense - they have a cheaper version for $499.99. Ebay matches these prices that the chain camera store had..
any one have leads on reasonable filters and lenses?
Keep looking for used gear. Apart from the 18-55mm lens I bought with a Nikon D60 that I subsequently sold on, every piece of camera gear I bought was bought used, mostly on ebay. Most of them including the pro lenses were bought for about 50%-60% of retail price and almost all of them were in nearly new condition.

KEH.com deals specifically in used camera gear. Wife's used them a lot (she's a photographer), we've been very satisfied. Unfortunately she's a Nikon person, so I don't know a thing about Canon stuff
Given that Canon and Nikon should have roughly similar market shares, I would think they've got a similarly thriving used market.

I've scored some good deals on used camera equipment on craigslist. I don't trust people enough to buy a used piece of fragile equipment without seeing it firsthand.

Don't overlook police auctions, camera stuff is so specialised it goes stupid-cheap. But you have to know what your looking at/for.

What he said. KEH is the place to get used gear for sure. I have never had trouble with gear from them and I have bought a lot ranging from old film bodies to modern digital. I had one camera that had a few faults when i got it, I called them up and had it swapped out. I needed it for a job so they overnighted the replacement on them and sent the return tag for the original.
