Made this today - leather faced slapper spoon - helps level out metal work... Just used some scrap 1/8" steel, black pipe and a bit of leather. What other handy tools have you guys made out of scrap lately?

Not really a tool, but I just made a cord reel out of an old Fuchs wheel. It's mounted to a cedar and mahogany base. I chose to keep the patina rather than paint it, but I am obsessive enough to be considering the addition of a brake rotor behind it.

I have a magnesium Pantera wheel awaiting the same treatment, but I need to buy more cords or hoses first.

In reply to Woody:

Cool - does it spin or is it static? I've got two slightly bent phonedials that I want to turn into cord/hose reels too. I'd ge nice to have a hook on the inside of the rim to grab the end of the cord and then spin the wheel by hand to reel it in, but I don't want to buy a hub to get it to spin.

Mount it on a complete stub axle with brake rotor obtained from a junk yard. All the wheel has to do is match the bolt pattern, they you'll have a spinning and pivoting mount. Polish the rotor, paint the caliper...hhhmm sounds like an accessory for one of those guys who have garage/show palaces. Triple the price, chrome the caliper, use worthless brembo/porsche/whatever caliper, mount on wood of their choice. Just self trademarked and copywrited .

Ive seen the same as a hose reel on the front of a house and it was a Mante Carlo wheel. It looked awful.

Also, Oldtin, where did the leather come from? Back seat?

Cut the wheel in half, mount the bottom half a couple of feet below the top. Hose can then be wrapped snug, but not wound into a tight ball.

Mine is a late 70's Z28 wheel.

Or use two wheels.
