Serious question:  Why/how have I never heard of it until this morning?  Did I know and had somehow forgotten? Or, was this somewaht obscure and is just being talked about EVERYWHERE this year for the first time.  Seriously, it was mentioned on the moring news, all over facebook, now this forum...

I learned about it when I saw it on the calendar on my phone. No idea what it is, up until this thread that was the only time I've ever heard of it.

There's been a Juneteenth celebration festival in Columbus for a while, so I knew about the holiday. It has not historically been high profile but it should be!

A holiday no one has ever heard of commemorating something.  Go figure.

(First time I ever heard of it was when my phone calendar noted it today. I’ve asked 4 different African American coworkers- they never heard of it either)

I learned about it in elementary school in the '70s and I've always seemed to live someplace in Florida where there were local celebrations. I'm sure it's more of a southern thing, but maybe it just depends on how active your local municipality decided to be about it as to whether you;ve heard of it or not.

It's seemed to be growing in awareness and popularity around here for the last few years although I hadn't heard about it before that. Seems like a much better reason for a holiday than selling Hallmark cards (mother's/fathers day) or selling beer (St. Patricks, Cinco de Mayo.)

Never heard of it. Still don't know what it is since no one in this thread explained it.

Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is an American holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. state of Texas.

Two seconds it takes to double click on a word, right click on it, and select "search google for 'juneteenth.'" On the phone, press and hold to highlight word, then press "define." Takes less time than posting "I don't know what this is."

I'm with Nick on this one.  The rules of your post would make 99% of the threads on here obsolete.

P.S. now I know what it is, Juneteenth is a horrible portmanteau as it's not obvious that it refers to June 19th out of context.

Or I can keep on living in ignorance about it as I've made it this far in life. I really don't care what it is. But I guess you could have explained it in probably less words than it took you to type out your diatribe. I thought this place was better than that.

This is the first year it's been high-profile enough that I've seen it in international news, although I vaguely recall hearing something about it before.

By me we have the similar Emancipation Day which is a fairly big deal, it's a public holiday.

An American holiday that commemorates an event in a single U.S. state doesn’t make any sense.

Should we have 50 of these for each of the state’s emancipation days?

Weird.

I think the point is that that was the date that all of the slaves were oficially freed accross the entire US.  Texas was the last place to officially receive the news...

It's not. It hasn't been in years. It's Facebook with all your high-school cliques and middle school rudeness thrown in.

I used to live this place. Seems every time I visit, I wonder why.

Interesting. I don't think I'd ever heard of it until this thread and I've lived in Texas' hat (Oklahoma) my whole life and been there many times.
