The headunit in my car has been with me in various cars for about 7 years now. Never had much problems up until now. Recently, the volume has just started randomly going all the way up to the max and then also sometimes it will randomly go down to zero for no reason. What is the diagnosis here?
Is this a unit that has a remote? Sometimes they get confusing signals, even when you are not using the remote it can pick up other signals.
Mine is about 11 years old and the volume button has to be pressed very hard in just the right spot to work. The face plate is removable and I need to pull it and spray some contact cleaner in there ever once in a while. Perhaps you have a similar solution?
This unit has no remote and the volume button doesn't move as freely as it once does. Where would I be able to get some contact cleaner like you speak of? That might be worth a shot..
7 years out of a head unit is pretty good.
When you think about it, for as much use as the radio in your car gets, it's probably one of the better things to have around in good working order. Hell, I haven't had a car more than 3 years, much less a head unit.
My current Sony unit is about 3 years old and I'm ready for upgrade already...
Not to jack this tread, but my Pioneer does not feed CD intermittently. The cold seems to make it worse. But its 13+ years old. It might just be dirty. Is there anyway to clean these things.
I have on ocasion opened things like this up and taken the shop air hose to it. It is amaving how much fuzz and dust accumulates inside stuf like that, even the ones in your house.
Many, many (like 20) years ago when i was even poorer than I am these days I was given a VCR that my niece had given oatmeal to "just like the comercial" All the belts just deteriorated from it for some reason. I opened up the cabinet and cleaned the oatmeal and dead roaches out (it sat on a back porch for awhile) replaced the belts with o-rings for automotive A/C lines and it is still working today My sister-inlaw uses it.
Wurth made the best contact cleaner out there. I understand they have changed the formula and it is not as good. I use CRC brand that I get at the auto parts store.
(edited for E36 M3ty spelling, Probably still didnt get them all)
