I built those kick-butt enclosures for my Impala and put two 10" Kicker CV-R subs in them. I was pushing the wattage a bit but thought it would be OK with the really tight boxes. Well, it wasn't. I ripped the cone surround right out of the basket on one of them. I thought about simply replacing or repairing that one sub, but I think it would just happen again.
Amp is a Kenwood sub amp that is 1-ohm stable and makes 900wrms at 1 ohm. That's how I had it wired (4 voice coils at 4 ohms all in parallel) so I was giving 450w to each sub but thought I had the gain down far enough to compensate. I was wrong. I think the amp drops to 500w at 4 ohms so that is an option depending on the voice coil configuration.
I listen to classic rock, folk, jazz and bluegrass. I do enjoy big boom hip hop and rap from time to time, but i focus on quality, not quantity. For that reason, I have sealed enclosures that are about 0.9 cu ft.
Any good recommendations on subs to fill those holes?
The front 6.5" component speakers are also dying. I lost the woofer on the right channel and the tweeter on the left. They are after all 15 years old and probably aren't too happy that I just started giving them 85wrms. I really like CDTs, but they have about 20 different options of 6.5" separates.
Any thoughts on 6.5"s?
We put a set of the CDT Classics in my buddy's S2000 probably.... 3 years ago? They sound incredible, we got them for $120 shipped, and they're holding up great.
Sony seems to have some nice speakers out these days, too.
This is the list that i came up with on a budget a few months back.
1) Sony XS-GS1621C - $176 shipped
2) JBL P660C - $154.24 shipped
3) JBL MS-62C - $180 shipped
4) Pioneer TS-D1720C - $100 shipped
I ended up with the Sonys. Can't tell you how they sound. Let the magic smoke out of the car.
Good to know. CDTs have every option from $100 to $1400 for 6.5" components. Hard to pick bang-for-the-buck with that many options.
I can tell you that the Classics offer incredible bang for the buck.
Enough that it made me curious to see what happens if you step up.

These just arrived at my house yesterday, along with P963 6x9" speakers for my Alfa 164. I have yet to install them, but these JBLs have excellent reviews and the build quality is great. They come with a lot of different mounting accessories.
I hope to install the 6x9s installed tomorrow and the components by next week, so I will check back in. For now I will be running them through just a Pioneer head unit, but at some point I will change over to a newer Sony head unit and a Zapco AG360 amp.

Can't beat these for value. I use them in my own truck. Excellent bass, but need to be crossed over aggressively.
You can almost always build a better component set for (far) less than they typically cost from the usual suspects. These Peerless are probably better than any of the ones recommended
In reply to RexSeven:
You will NEED an amp for those components. They're really power hungry and the reason I ended up with a monster Soundstream amp.
I just couldnt get the speakers in in time, so now I have 3x the amp I need for the Sonys that did get here in time...
... then the car didn't get finished anyways. Oh well.

Ts parameters on it suggest its much more suited to a lot more volume than I have - even free air would suit these. I'm looking for something with a little more travel and mass.
When you're putting speakers in a door, or a dash, TS parameters are, for the most part, not a consideration. Those numbers are quite good, and probably better than most of the cheap (the stuff mentioned) drivers available.
Oh... sorry, just realized they were 6.5s. I thought they were subs. They do look nice for doors.
