Had a phone with USB Type C for a couple years now, so far so good.

I had phones phone with micro-USB for years and never had an issue. USB Type C, I get about 8 or 9 months and the cord doesn't seat flat (yes, I tried cleaning it) and won't stay plugged in and charges slowly.

I also recommend trying out the Google Messages app, even if you're getting a new phone. I have a Samsung phone, and the stock Samsung SMS app was being dumb in other ways. Google Messages fixed all that, and works great!

I wholeheartedly recommend that you smash your phone.  You will be a better man for it.  And if Everyman smashed his phone, we would find that the world would become Nirvana.

About the USB ports, both micro and C.  Get a wireless charging pad off AmazaBay... no more plugging and unplugging and the port is filled and covered.  I've had a phone or two and a real nice tablet die from the ports wearing out or breaking away from the board.
