What's with vinyl fencing? I've never seen it in Australia. Seems like a really poor choice of material for fencing.
All my boundary fences are colourbond (basically a powdercoated steel). Looks pretty decent, comes in a variety of colours and lasts for years. A 6x8 panel assembly costs about $90au, so surely would be comparable to vinyl in terms of cost.
In your situation I'd be planting either along the fence or in the gap.
Vinyl privacy fencing is fairly common around me. As with other materials, there are different grades/costs. My neighbors vinyl privacy fence is over 10 years old and still looks nice, much better than my non maintenance free weather beaten cedar privacy fence.
Is it possible/feasible to add a second tier of chain link on top of your existing fence? If you really like chain link that much maybe that's an option?
