Changing the speakers out in my daughter's Accent, and am being foiled by this window crank:
I watched this YouTube video, but even though I'm duplicating the action, I can't make it work:

What trick am I missing? Does the rag go behind or in front of the trim ring? I've tried it both ways with no success.
Given tHat the trim trim ring comes off with the crank I would say has to go behind

That crank handle looks like it has a pop-off plastic trim cap on the back side, with a phillips screw under it into the shaft.
The YouTube video is to remove a U-shaped retainer clip. If it has one of those, then it is a matter of getting one leg of the retainer clip grabbed with the rag, and pulling the clip open.
There is a special tool made (available at AutoZone, etc) to remove/ install the retainer clips.
If you reach your finger behind, you should be able to feel the retainer clip. You are wanting to pull on only 1 leg of the clip (to spread it).
Also try substituting a open zip tie for the rag. The thickest zip tie you have.

The retainer clip could be installed 180*.
Try the rag trick from the opposite side.
Miata cranks are held on the same way. An old washcloth never failed to get that clip off. Didn't help me find where it landed though...
these will get it off...

The rag trick is the quickest and simplest. Depending on the design, the clip might be installed at any angle. So try a few times from different directions.

Neon cranks are the same way. I hate to impugn anyone's character here, but I screwed around trying to do that rag trick for about an hour and I think they're dirty liars. The trim tool for either AutoZone or harbor freight pops those clips off in a matter of seconds and is worth every penny.
Really? not one dirty joke? I'm disappointed.

Huh. No denying the tool is better, but when I had my Neons, I used the rag trick a dozen times and it took seconds each time.
I usually fish around with a paperclip, but that's just me.

Agreed. I've tried the rag trick a few times, never got it. Had always dicked around with butter knives, screwdrivers, etc, for hours.
Then, while getting other unrelated stuff at the FLAPS, I saw the magic tool, and bought it on a whim. Best $6 I've spent in my toolbox, in a long time.
Best part is that the opposite end has a tab that holds the clip, for reinstallation.
when you reinstall it, you just put the clip in the handle and push it on until it clicks... you know, like the bored factory worker did 1000 times every day that he or she went to work..
The clip that Hyundai used had such short little legs that the rag could never grab the end. I was able to get them off with a screwdriver after mangling the trim ring a bit. Anyway, it's all back together now and my daughter is thrilled with the improvement in sound.
