My 2013 Focus is the newest car I've ever owned. I found out from the My Ford website that the Focus has 3 TSBs on it. I've never had to take a car in for one.
So is this technically warranty work? Do I just take it to the Ford dealer and not expect a charge? Or do I have to pay for this work?
From what I gathered this should all still be covered under the warranty, but I wanted to make sure before I brought it in and got a nasty surprise,
A TSB is a technical service bulletin. Basically, its a way for techs to share information, or the engineers to tell the techs how to fix a problem that may occur. Warranty is a completely separate deal. Some repairs as laid out in a TSB may be covered, if the car is still in warranty. Others may not.
A recall will be done free. A TSB is for informational purposes only.
Also- do any of the bulletins actually cover a problem you are having? They could be as simple as a method to clean the wiper blades when the car has been left under a tree, or as complex as how to replace the rear clutch actuator in the automatic transmission to get rid of a rough shift.
That. Information on how to fix a common issue, not a recall.
Apparently Ford calls them Field Service Actions. These are them.
Based on nothing more than the titles, I'd say the first one you should probably do, the others are to extend warranty and repair a problem if it shows up.
Well the last one I'm going to do for sure because I have been having the shuddering.

Yes, TSBs are generally "Hey, add this to the service manual."
Or, sometimes, "HEY MORON, since you don't pay attention to what we wrote in the service manual, listen up:"
Find the actual reported TSB's here

for the 2013 Focus I am seeing 56 of them (TSB)
Oh, and 4 recalls!
Engine Wiring Splices may cause Stall
Side Lights Inoperable/FMVSS 108
Driver Side Child Lock may not Function
Vehicle Rooftop Rack System
Now not all of the 56 or 4 may apply to yours (you can lookup by VIN), but that represents anything affecting ALL 2013 focus production.

A Field Service Action is lower level then and precedes a TSB. If they cross a certain threshold of incidents per number of vehicles, it advances to TSB. If it keeps escalating and is safety related it may become a recall. FSAs are not reported to NHTSA whereas TSBs are.
GMs version of an FSA is a PI or PIE (Preliminary Info/Preliminary Info From Engineering).
