How lame is it for a 40 year old guy to get his first tatoo?

Or is it not lame at all, but really cool? Or is it just really lame to ask everyone's opinion on the subject?

Tattoos are lame no matter the age of the person and please, please, please girls don't do it anywhere, it ruins the landscape.

Not lame at all. Probably a good thing you waited. It takes me at least a year from design to skin. I draft up what I want and put it on my wall at work, where I have to see it for 40 hours a week, day in day out. If it is there after a year, it's worth getting. Exception to that are my passport stamps.

How many cars from the GRM calender are tattooed on your body?

I think it's really cool. Unless it is chinese writing or barbed wire around your arm...

I don't need any identifying marks, thanks.

Whatever you do, dont put a logo on your arm...

It's certainly a personal preference, but I'm in the group that thinks they're not cool (especially on women.) If you're having a mid life crisis, why not just grow a ponytail... At least you can cut it off when you finally realize it was a bad idea.

Actually, it seems to me, that getting a tatoo at 40 is probably far more reasonable then getting one at 20. There is a lot of crap people permanently affix to themselves that I see NO way they will be proud of having on their body in 20 years. At least at 40 you are pretty set in your ways.

Personally I would only see it as reasonable if it was some sort of permanent statement such as a child, a very significant event etc. Putting a tatoo across your wrist that says "cut here" probably doesn't fit my guidelines.

I'm almost 65 and am going to get one for my birthday. Palm tree and a setting sun. I'm just a wild and crazy guy.

I've got lots of tattoos, and so does my wife. We usually get one on our anniversary. I get them because I like them. I don't care a whole hell of a lot who else does or doesn't. Neither of us currently reside in a trailer park, and having tattoos for about half my life hasn't hurt me socially as far as I'm aware. I do get unsolicited offers for drugs more often than my unadorned peers, though.

If you're on a message board asking if it's cool to get a tattoo, it might not be a good idea. Ask yourself why you want one first, and be sure. If you're on a message board giving tattoo advice with none of your own, you're under suspicion.

That said, if you feel compelled to get one, take the time to find the right artist. All good tattoos are custom, don't get something that dozens or hundreds of others already have. (Fire/Police/Military tattoos get a pass.)

But i follow the opposite side. I don't want mine to mean a damn thing. It's body ART. So therefor, i want art, and art only on my skin.

Not weird, assuming you have a reason to want it now. Tattoos for the sake of tattoos are kind of lame - they either need to make a meaningful statement about you OR be true body art.

Barbed wire and Chinese lettering and similar stuff are weak.

My guideline on tattoos is that cheap ones tend to look trailer park, decent ones don't. Good ones are art, but if you are dithering then it's not the right time (yet) to get one. Which is why I don't have one but my wife does.

Mind you, I probably wouldn't go all Charles Manson and have one on public display all the time.

Ya mean like Mike Tyson? But I truly doubt anybody would laugh at his while he was in the same room.

I would not get a tattoo myself and seeing one on a woman is an instant turnoff for me.

Of course everybody has different tastes. I wouldn't try to tell anybody else to get one or not to get one, any more than I would try to tell somebody else what kind of car to drive or what kind of motorcycle to ride.

I'm 30, tattoo free, but am considering this:

I whacked my finger pretty good on a burr someone left on a breech block, took my ring finger to the bone, spliced tendon and arterry (blood carrying tube). I healed with a scar not worthy of converstion and a string of pearl like knots under the skin, that's the tendon. It hurts when conditions are right or if I turn it a certain way, but I can't wear a ring. For our 20th anniversary I got a Celtic knot like braid put where my wedding band goes.

I can't advise you other than to say if you're not a tramp, don't get a Tramp Stamp.

hmmm never got any of mine just to get them because they were pretty if you will. Most have a very personal meaning that only a few people in my life would even be aware of. Dont really care what anybody else thinks...

Personal choice. Don't get or not get a tattoo for random people on an internet message board, even if it is the best internet message board.

Me, I don't have one, can't see ever getting one. If you want one, get one. I don't thnk one way or the other about them, don't see where your age factors into it at all.

Dude if you are gonna get a tattoo, you have to get TAZ pulling a bong with "party on" written underneath it......maybe with your Greek letters.

Either that or two TAZs one on each side of your neck, holding hands around your throat!

You will never regret a TAZ tattoo!
