Holy hell. This is the V6 class cars too..... The v8 guys shave about a second off, but dont have the awesome turbo set up's.
Manual trans cars start about 7 mins.

Cool.
But damn, that is a LOT of breakage. Is it normal that only 1 in 3 cars actually make it up the hill with the engine in one piece?
how about a competition: the Icelanders vs the UAEers.. i guess some rednecks from the USA can show up if they want, too, but they seem to be outclassed..
What's interesting is the amount of Americans and Europeans who help build those dune trucks. The Arabs fund and drive, but they've got a few westerners on the teams as well.
So, what is with the numerous cars that just sort of die? Is that drivetrain breakage? I was expecting more of the pop, pop, huge plume of white smoke results.
For the 8 min one: It looks like it started shooting raw gas out the exhaust with predicable result. What was that? A dead plug?

Did he lose his engine or did he hit a land mine?
If this doesn't make it into the FnF decalogue with Dom kicking some butt then I'll be disappointed.

I think the folks from the US would show up with lightly less powerful trucks, but with sand paddles and show 'em a thing or two.
I actually got to witness this firsthand outside of Dubai a couple years ago. My wife and I rented a Land Cruiser to play in the dunes and after about a mile in off the highway we came upon some of this dedicated dune climbers practicing. So many trucks had American v8s (inside Nissan patrols, Mitsubishi pajeros etc). Most of them just had the strategy of hitting the dune at 100 mph and keeping it floored until they are either successful or it almost rolls back down the hill. So many of them didn't even move the steering wheel. More money than sense on the street and off over there more times than not. Automotive culture is relatively new over there compared to the U.S. So these guys buy these incredible machines without really even understanding the basics of how they work.
I know most of the sand goes backwards, but wouldn't some sort of air filter be prudent in that place?
Lotsa melted parts there...
I want to see how they do it in Saudi Arabia.. I envision them doing it on 2 wheels while 2 guys change one of the tires..

The slope is more like 35 degrees. Wikipedia probably meant 50% slope, which is the way highway slopes are measured. Still, that is pretty steep.
