Its the copper normally found inside of them that people want......
Heck, my outside a/c unit was left perfectly alone when some meth heads stole the aluminum siding off of 3 sides of my garage....I'm just glad they didn't look inside and see the BMW, a SHO, and probably 20 aluminum wheels....
Our church had one of their AC units stolen a few years back. New ones and remaining older ones were then surrounded by a fairly hefty metal cage anchored to both the pad they sit on and the side of the building. Residential units have been relatively safe in my area, but I imagine having them behind a fence and not in plain sight would probably help a lot...
Most houses in my neighborhood have cages on the units bolts to the concrete pad. Frankly anything that makes the thief think twice would probably be worth it, even if it isn't totally secured.
I managed Freddie Mac houses in Phoenix during the recent foreclosure stint here. Dealing with missing units was a daily event. If they were not gone by the time we took over the house, we placed a cage as above on almost every one. They were probably 95% effective if not more.
Surprisingly, one day I found a note in a 3 ring binder insert taped to the top of the unit. It stated something along the lines of 'This unit has a pressure switch trigger wired to the alarm system. If you cut the lines, the police will come'. The house it was on was in a rough area and looked to have been empty for quite a while. Sometimes less is more.
We used RFIDs for a while. Caught a few thieves, but there are always more.
3 metal posts set in concrete with a locking removable bar that goes over the top of the unit preventing removal of the cover seems to be sufficient
In Detroit, a lot of businesses put them on the roof, surrounded by razor wire.
I like the cage+fence charger idea.

Yes. Classy. Very, very classy.
Wow...my AC unit is not secured, my garage door gets left open more than I care to admit during the night, I have several tools outside while I'm landscaping. Nothing ever gets stolen? WTF? Where do you guys live? Somalia???
People steal AC units??? Seriously?

It's a pretty big problem everywhere in the country......along with empty houses (whether for lease or for sale) being broken into and having the copper plumbing and wiring pulled out of the walls.
This has been a big problem for approaching a decade.
Where do you live? Where people don't pay attention to the news?

What is a good way to insure that my two relatively new units don't fall victim? I've considered adding some motion-detectors coupled to floodlights, and I'm mulling the idea of some sort of alarm. Maybe a wire attached to the unit that would sound an alarm when severed? I discovered yesterday that in addition to one house very near mine, there have been maybe a dozen similar thefts within a 5-mile radius in the last 30 days.
Maybe you should have made better life decisions so you didn't have to live in a bad part of town?
Flounder neutralized...

Where do you live, stereotypical everybody happy suburbia?
Yeah, that's a common misconception. I actually live in a very nice little neighborhood in a fairly affluent county in close proximity to a small city. We've had very few cases of theft through the 10 years we've been here. It is not at all a "high crime area." No place is free from the threat of crime, and sometimes thieves will go looking in nicer neighborhoods to find what they want.
Flounder re-animated!
