Every year, I see all the reports of cool stuff at SEMA. I'd really like to go see for myself. Anybody know how an average Joe can get in?

Find a buddy with a shop. Register for the show with that business's information.
Or start a blog and get a media pass (not guaranteed).

ah.
he can print out some faux business cards and get in that way. They weren't that picky about credentials when I registered my first time about 10 yrs ago. I also registered for AAPEX which kicked in SEMA as a freebie. one pass gets in both
I've been going for years, but at the show last year I overheard people saying that they were a little more stringent in the credentialing process lately. That said, there are so many entrances into that convention center that you could probably just walk in. Find like three different colorful lanyards and tuck the end into a breast pocket and you'll fit in fine.
Seriously, there are doors open all over the place- some have attendants standing by, many don't. It's kinda a zoo.
They were super strict last year for me to get in. Wanted my business license, tax number, copy of business cards, etc.
I'm involved in the tradeshow business so I go to a bunch of these.....it's pretty tough these days to sneak in to the LVCC or any big convention hall without the right wristband and lanyard and badge. I've never had to match my name to the badge though. I sure wouldn't bank on just waltzing in.
