Right now, the onus is on him for being an shiny happy person. If you do or say anything to jack him up and make him crazy, the shiny happy person mantle gets transferred to you. It's your place of business and you have to think of your responsibilities to yourself and your family first. It's a tough road to ride but it's one millions of men everywhere are forced to go every single day.
At the end of the day, he has to be him and you get to be you. So don't give this shiny happy person another thought.
I'd have probably said nothing and ignore the guy, all while checking the oil, tire pressure, washing the windshield (assuming you have one on the bike), and maybe make a show of getting your gloves on, starting the thing, and making sure that the idle is right.
