Don't use catsup on anything. Fries with mayo on the side for dipping for me.
I have to have ketchup with my fries to make sure I get all my vegetables. I prefer to dip them but will put it on top if circumstances dictate it like if I am eating Nathan's in the car I will squirt ketchup into the bag of fries and eat them with the little fork they stick in them.

I have.... and since switching my diet.. I've dropped 40lbs in the past year, reduced my usual 6 yearly sinus infections to nearly 1 and was able to stop taking environmental allergy shots... Cholesterol is down 80 points. Blood sugar under control, no more weird hypoglycemic crashes...
I'm sure though you know a better way? Cause mine was under the supervision of a group of registered dieticians.
Ketchup ON the fries.
My best friend's wife is Dutch. She has an affinity for mayonnaise that is horrifying.
Ugh, I can't stand ketchup just squirted haphazardly on my fries. So messy.
I prefer to dip in ketchup, or if available, ranch dressing. Mmmm...
I never really eat more than 3 fries at a time, so getting anything to put on them just seems like a waste of time.
I prefer to cut my potatoes into a roughly cube shape and cook them, along with some onion slices, in coconut oil then plop a few eggs on top and cook until the yolk is just starting to solidify. I add paprika or chili powder every once in a while for a bit of a different flavor.
Like this, except over medium instead of slimy and gross and sans bacon:
On the extremely rare occasion that I have fries it's usually at Culver's and I have them with some ketchup that's loaded with black pepper in a 2:1 ketchup to pepper ratio. Tasty!
I go either beside, or in a little plastic cup to dip ala fast food. However I do like dipping McDonald's fries into Mac sauce.
On the side.
Perhaps its time for controversial topic #2:
Milk first then Lucky Charms OR
Lucky Charms first, milk over the top.
(Hint: The correct answer is Milk first, them Lucky Charms, so you get a nice mix of dry and milk soaked cereal)
I kind of take the hybrid approach with ketchup on the fries yet with some piled in the corner for dipping.
If I'm eating them out of a paper container, then dipping seems less messy so I go that route.

Keep looking for a dietitian until you find one that recommends ketchup.

Dry cereal? What kind of person are you? Just like how it's always banana to mouth but never mouth to banana, it's always cereal then milk, then stir it up and let the milk soak in before the first bite is taken.

FTFY.

If he has problems with vinegar, the closest he'll get with any self respecting RD is tomato paste.

I never thought of pouring milk first. First grilled peanut butter now this, my whole world is changing.

As a side dish, gravy on fries is my first choice, but needs to be with the right main course.
For appetizers, chili and cheese on the fries is top of the list.
If they are with a burger, either just salt, or ketchup on the side so they don't get soggy.
