I certainly hope it becomes more common.  I would certainly consider wearing one in any crowded situation.  I would have loved to had worn one when I went to an NFL game about a year ago.... it was stupid crowded and I ended up catching the flu (maybe Covid, it was one of the original hot spots, but I didn't show the anti-bodies a few months later)

Actually, those exist, and they are utterly terrifying in person.

We (I) got COVID even wearing masks.  Doesn't mean I think they are worthless or make you sick.  We still wear them.

May or may not continue after the all clear sounds.  They're not a bad idea in general but neither of us had frequent sickness issues before.  Allergies are my biggest problem.

I personally have suffered from more sinus issues this year then I ever have (plus the super annoying fogging of glasses) means I won't wear it going forward if I can avoid it (meaning once masks rules are lifted. I'll continue to wear one where required).

100% agree. Hopefully we're not at the point that they can see through them yet.

I will say that I get a bit of a dry throat tickle if I wear a mask for more than 30 minutes or so at a time.  The glasses fogging is annoying, too, but that can usually be solved by putting the mask as high as possible, and the glasses as low as possible.

The worst part so far, is if one of the pet's hairs gets into the mask at some point, since it doesn't always come out in the wash.  I'll put a clean mask on, and suddenly have a cat hair in my mouth, usually when I'm somewhere I really don't want to remove the mask.

Funny - sometimes when I get that, without a mask on, I'll put a mask on to solve it. I learned that from one of my daughters neonatologists when she was in the NICU. We had been under "full" PPE (gown, mask, gloves) for about 18 hours when Angela's viral tests all came back negative. Then during rounds, the Doc started coughing a little bit - dry throat he said. He solved it by putting on the mask, and saying in his middle-eastern accent "the mask - keeps your throat from getting dry!"

I've been thinking about that specific anecdote a lot over the past year.

I witnessed a guy belching as he was walking down our hallway at work and then he put his hand to his mask and muttered excuse me when he saw me.

I sometimes burp and the mask hides it.  I might need to improve my bad habits when not wearing masks.

I wear disposable masks all day. 7-9 hrs. I'm required to wear one anytime I'm on the bus or bus barn grounds.
My glasses get badly fogged up in the morning so the first thing I do once the bus starts is turn on the auxiliary fan that is pointed at me. The air bounces off my forehead and quickly clears my glasses.  So I can do my pre trip checks and required paperwork.
I know they work because I've had kids with Covid 19 on my bus and while many kids get it or need to be quarantined  I've avoided it all year.

I like it. Especially in the winter. I've found myself wearing them in situations that it's completely unnecessary (outside in my driveway by myself). I have a good friend that literally can't wear one. You can see him start to gag after a few minutes. I don't understand why but I watched it happen.
I will probably continue to wear masks in high risk situations (I am currently wearing 2 masks and that even seems ok). I've been considering buying a Narwal mask in case I have to travel for work.

Before covid I slept with a neck gaiter over my face in winter to help with dry sinuses. Helps clear up sinus infections too by just keeping things moist to heal.

I work with the public and the mask makes it harder to understand them and we have several customers who are borderline deaf and read lips too communicate. I'll be happy to see them go! My allergy issues are still as prominent as ever. All it's done for me is make me blind from glasses fog coming inside work.

I didn't get sick before. I haven't been sick since.

I won't be wearing them any longer than necessary.

Looking back, no colds at my house for over a year. Looking forward, I don't think we're ever going back to a time where almost no one wears them.

One, we're not going to eliminate it entirely. Two, this is just the current pandemic. Not the first, won't be the last.

Quick question...

I saw someone wearing 2 surgical masks recently. (Not 2 different types of masks)

You said you wear 2 masks. What's the advantage as you see it?

Layering two masks increases the efficacy of the filtration. It's a recommendation that is becoming more common due to the higher transmissibility of the recently emerging viral mutations.

I already wear three layers.

Edit: to clarify, that's all in a single mask. My wife sews custom fit cloth masks, two layers with a replaceable inner filter.

CDC has been recommending it for a while, but I think the actual recommendation was for better fitting and multi layer masks. For many people, the easy button for that is two masks.

In any case, it's another slice of cheese.

I don't mind wearing a mask in public, and I'm a BIG advocate for everyone doing so right now. Having said that, don't forget that the social distancing part of the process has a positive impact on the general flu and sickness transmission too. In the future when that eases up the masks will be less effective overall at preventing common colds and such but will still be better than going without. There's a reason medical staff wear them after all.

I guess I just wish people would listen better.

The CDC recommendation is for better fitment, and to consider wearing 2 DIFFERENT kinds of masks- a surgical and a cloth one over it.

Article on 2 masks

They specifically say not to wear 2 surgical masks.

Loose fitting masks like surgical masks biggest weakness is that they don't fit tightly, and therefore don't provide filtration. Air goes around the mask. Doubling 2 surgical masks just makes the problem worse. It reduces airflow through the mask, which increases flow around (the easier path).

Just like a car.  If the air filter fits poorly in the filter box, we all understand it serves no purpose.  Adding a 2nd air filter doesn't make it better.

Our media echo chamber is doing a poor job of communicating. People hear "2 masks are better", and simply double up without looking into what the study and the CDC are actually saying.

When need better communication, and to be better communicators.

The theory (not mine, heard Fauci say it on Today) is that more layers = more filtration and protection. If I am wearing one mask I wear a cloth mask made by Jaanuu, apparently they make scrubs, it is comfortable and "feels like" it is offering good protection. When I wear two masks I wear a regular disposable under the Jaanuu. The disposable has a formable wire in the top but on me they tend to pop out on the sides, the Jaanuu feels very secure on the sides but looser on the nose bridge. I wear both and boom, the nose bridge is secure and the cloth mask pulls the disposable down on the side of the face.

The disposables work perfectly for me because I have a fat face( and everything else ).  That or my ears are too far back but whatever that mask lays down on my face like it was designed for it.
The little kids I tell them to put some twists in their ear loops  to snug it up and tuck it down under their chin and up high on their nose. It helps.
