Aerotek, if they are in your area is one. Too bad you aren't down this way, OK has lots of jobs for engineers in the oil/gas and defense sectors.
Add in good salaries with super low cost of living.........

Unfortunately this part I'm not much help with. They have found me. Like I said I'm a niche market, its grown but when I started in it there were literally only a handful of people on the east coast who did what I did so they came looking for us. I had my resume on a few technical sites and they found me that way.

Us young guys who have employment options that's who. We all know what salary means and don't want to work that. Call me spoiled/babied or whatever that's fine.
In the current adversarial climate (when did companies start thinking of their employees as "the enemy", anyway?) I'd call you smart. Three years ago, an old buddy of mine (ex-coworker, promoted to middle management) tried to get me to apply for a middle management position. I told him that I actually felt sorry for my old coworkers that had moved into management..they more hours (yes, they were on salary), had to enforce policies they personally disagreed with, and had to do so much administrative work that they were no longer really connected to the technical aspect of the division. I honestly thought they were some of the most miserable people I knew.
Irony Department: Both my old friend, and the person who eventually was promoted to the position he was trying to get me to apply for were let go in the same lay-off that I was.

I am more or less content at my job.
I like my job. The pay is decent, I get a nice truck to drive that I don't have to buy gas for, insurance/vacation/401K, and lots of free time. I don't mind working the occasional 24 hour day or being on 24 hour call once every 5 weeks.

While things are generally this way and its depressing I'll go back to the "I'm happy with my job" bit and say I work 40 hours a week. Im salaried. They dont get extra hours out of me and they are ok with that. If a task requires extra time in a day I will compensate myself for that time later (for instance Im running some system tests right now and tomorrow my normal 1/2 day friday will end at 10 instead of noon because I put in my time)
I know it's not the norm but its one of the reasons I am happy with my job and more importantly with the company I work for. The term "work life balance" is more than a buzzword in our company, they actually encourage it.

Advice? Take something, work hard, do more than they expect. Figure out what they're trying to get done and help get it done. Work your way up and become a manager.

Just curious, is there anything you haven't done? Honestly, it seems like every thread dealing with these situations, you've worked said job and been in said situation. I know there is that whole old age thing, but damn you've moved around
I really haven't moved that much. Got a degree in technical theatre, realized that wouldn't go very far, became a real estate agent. I sucked at that. Got into construction, and spent 35 years doing everything related, but along with this I worked with Habitat for Humanity in their appropriate technology department. This gave me experience at a vast array of construction techniques used worldwide. Took a short trip into a chemical research company for a few years, but mostly construction, and everything related to it. That covers a LOT of ground.
There. Now you've got my resume.

I somewhat regret my role on page 1 in jump-starting the dump-on-MM festival, but all I have to say is that if he'd just used percentages instead of hard numbers, as he should have been smart enough to do, this thread would have gone VERY differently.

That is only ironic if in those 3 years they made less than you because they were looking for the long term opportunity, if they made more for 3 years and got let go at the same time that is called smarter than you
Except for the whole "hating life" part. 719 bad days out of 1,091 doesn't sound like winning to me.

It's hard to hold down a second job when your primary job schedule is unpredictable. I get the feeling most of you have no experience doing theater work.
I don't mind my job that much. I get paid a decent amount for someone without a degree. My only real complaint is the latest health plan is a bit sucky, but it's better than nothing.

I don't know if elated is the right word but I am happy. Aside from having to stand outside for 8+ hours a day in all kinds of weather and having to work most holidays and weekends it's not to bad. It's not where I pictured myself when I was younger but I never have to play milk the berkeleying trouser-snake with my boss to gat a nice little pile of money.
Like I've told alot of my more educated friend's who can't find a job they should try taking the test to work here. Even at $28/hr, decent benefits and pension we still can't hire enough competent people to keep the place running. Most people I suggest it to feel it's below them because they got a degree meanwhile they're in thier 30's living in mom's basement and busing tables somewhere waiting for the right position in their given field.

My niece is in technical theatre work. I know what it's like.
Besides, his post said he always has Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday off. What varies is the amount of hours he puts in between Thursday afternoon and Sunday morning on a given week. Sounds to me like he could give some other employer at least 2 of those 3 M-W days on a very regular basis.
well, even that sometimes changes... I have worked on those days too.
the problem is.. I HAVE looked for a secondary job.. but you try finding a job when you only have three days free.. and those days are mon, tue, wed... one of the things all employers want right now is "flexibility"
Like I am going to give up my life for minimum wage.
What I am doing to moving closer to work. I just found half a duplex for 100 more a month that will save me more in gas and insurance than I will be spending.. For some reason, my insurance company thinks I drive more than 7500 miles a year... when they factor in that I live 12 miles from work and IF I work 5 days a week. it comes close.. but now they think that I drive BOTH my cars 7500 miles a year...
Getting your pay cut sucks now matter how much you make.
I am happy with my job. I make good money and the job is for the most part secure.
(Spelling edit)
I do agree.. it would have been better if I came right out and said I just got raped for a 30% pay cut....

Actually, the coffee shop was my wife's business.
I've been there SVreX, I have quite the list and no speciality.

Hey, i've got a pretty varied list as well and I'm only 28. I like hearing about others who do too. Funny, I tend to get along really well with those people. Maybe we all recognize eachothers crazy.
Did she have the coffee shop before you married her? I actually really like my job and where my career is heading right now but I do have this semi-recurring fantasy of opening a bike/coffee shop and micro brewery someday.

No. We bought it together. She ran it. Closed now.
If you are serious about a bike/coffee/brewery shop, call me. We've got an awful lot of equipment (sufficient for 2 stores) in storage right now.
I think Svrex is a whore...
did you see what I did there?

Aerotek I had never heard of them till recently but they hire the prawns for volkswagen. As for the OP A 25% decrease in salary is really E36 M3ty. It would be sweet to not half to work but three days a week but not knowing if work will be regular is a really crappy thing that is all to common in many industries these days.
