Thank you. There is a difference between people acting like idiots and being generally hated by all and actually causing emotional trauma to many different people over a period of time. I am all about freedom of speech but I have my limits. Harassing parents of murdered children is past that part.

The speech they use is far beyond being "offended" by them. There are already limits to speech ensconced in law. If you have a problem with those limits, disagreeing with the law and working to change it is probably more productive than disagreeing with the application of that law to one particular group.

The clan are not a recognized Church.. so Westboro falls into a netherland as far as the law goes.

Actually a lot would be done. They would lose their 501c3 non-profit (tax shelter) status, their recognition as a religion (much to the joy of normal Baptists, plus they couldn't legally perform their incest marriages anymore), and they could be barred from demonstrating as an organized group at such events as 6-year old's funerals.

Notice that none of that will restrict their speech in any way.

It would have the added bonus of severely impinging their leg to stand on in their frivolous lawsuits, and since it's always about the money, that would probably cause them to fade quietly into the night. (The WBC is a bunch of related attorneys who have admitted that they try to instigate confrontations so they can sue for assault, etc).

well.. considering it is obvious they not a real church.. and they have publicly stated that they sue people for money.. I do not see where yanking their non-profit (non-Prophit?) status would be a bad thing

Hate speech is not illegal in the US. The speech that is illegal in the US is defamation, incitement to riot, and fighting words.

Using the N-word is not illegal. It's extraordinarily dumb and will probably get your ass kicked and/or get you fired even if you use it on personal time, but it's not illegal.

I think you mis-read it, I said fiRed, not fiNed. Meaning, you might lose your job. Your employer doesn't have to employ you if you behave in a way they don't like, even if it's on your own time. ("Free speech" means the government doesn't penalize you for speaking your mind, employers are under no such restriction.)
