Guys and gals,
Whats the least horrible cheap paint I can throw on my diesel transfer tank to make it look better? I'm planning to pull it out, thoroughly degrease it, and wire wheel any rust spots. Then paint and prime. I'd like to keep it under $40. My thoughts are one of the following:
-rustoleum professional rattle can primer and paint
-rustoleum brush on oil based primer and paint
-farm and implement paint
What will hold up best to the inevitable diesel spill, UV (won't chalk) and scratches? Oh, it will be black and have a toolbox on top of the "L" section of the tank.
Hmm, although I have no personal experience applying it, my first thought is a DIY rattle can or roll-on/brush-on truck bed liner product. It would blend right into the bed that way, and should be very scratch resistant and impervious to most fluids once cured.
Might blow the $40 budget, though. How many square feet do you need to cover?
Implement paint. UV resistant, cheap. It's designed to coat, protect, and stand up to wicked abuse. It will never be lacquer shiny, but it's a workhorse.
Rustoleum oil-base works fine, but doesn't seem to be as UV resistant.

I'm estimating around 50-60 sqft. I'm not a big fan of truck bedliner because it's very difficult to get off if it does start peeling or looking bad.

Thanks Curtis, that's the direction I was leaning. Seems like it's designed with durability at the top of the list.

Sure. I have only used one brand, but I can vouch for that brand. Majic Town and Country. I assume they do black. Edit: I just looked. Yes they have black in both gloss and matte.
