I'm not totally up to speed, but anybody who's current is going to want to know what operating system you're running and what version (Windows? Mac? Windows 7? XP?)

AVG - Basic version is free.

I have been using it for years.

Windows Security actually does a remarkably good job as well... and it comes with your PC.

Agreed. My in-laws had McAfee on theirs, and I got the hard drive when they were done (score free 250gb!). For funzies I ran an scan with AVG free, and it found 7 (!) viruses McAfee let through. Not 7 'threats', there were dozens of those, I mean 7 separate viruses. Looks like McAfee is worth less than the $0 i paid for AVG.

Have different passwords for everything and a good password manager? God knows I need to do that!

I'd rather have a virus than McAfee. What an argumentative, ignorant piece of E36 M3.

Internet security?

Oxymoron.

AVG FTW. My parent's still haven't managed to nuke their PC since I installed AVG. Parent tested, child IT support approved.

I used to use Avast quite a bit, but they've become almost as bad as Symantec or McAfee with their bloatware.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials almost exclusively as it is free and fairly unobtrusive.

AVG provides you with daily nag screens to buy their product. Microsoft Security Essentials is where it's at.

I don't get any nags from AVG.

I use Norton Internet Security. License works on up to 3 computers, very much behind the scenes, unobtrusive and works. No issues since I've started using it a few years ago. Automatic updates.

AVG makes it tricky to not get any nag screens. You have to get the Free edition, and make sure you don't click anything about using Trial mode or "upgrading" to Trial mode.

MSSE is nag-free but it's just not as good at detecting viruses.

Avast and the Microsoft security suite will play nice together. With Avast you have to do a yearly licence renewal. Takes about 2 minutes.

Beware with Avast and AVG both about added on bloatware! Click carefully on your download (where you download from varies the care you need here), and on the installation (AVG only as I recall).

Avoid McAfee at all costs. It has more bloatware, and threads itself through the system like fungus. All but impossible to fully remove once its been installed. Pieces will be lurking in various other programs, ready to reinstall it if you don't pay close attention to every future install/update/modification you ever make to any program ever again.

You'll need to log in to post.
